What works and doesn’t work in taking care of your nitrocellulose lacquer finished guitars, especially the more modern ones?

Maybe I should audit a marketing course.

Takes care of both Nitro and Batio ...

I just use a little Gibson polish when I change strings. Mine are all holding up well, one of them is a 25 year old Gibson and another a 20+ year old AVRI strat. The strat has aged beautifully, it was cream and is now more yellow. The Gibson looks brand new.

Has the plasticizer thing been working out for everyone?

Re: How do YOU take care of your nitro?

Do not the Meguiars have the silicones inside?

Re: How do YOU take care of your nitro?

I use Virtuoso Cleaner and Polish if I have a "sticky" nitro feel. Nitro without plasticizers suffers less from it, so I just play them and wipe them down occasionally.

Re: How do YOU take care of your nitro?

I rub it with an old soft tshirt, if they are real grimey maybe dampen it a bit... other than that nothing

Re: How do YOU take care of your nitro?

I haven't done much differently than the rest of my guitars. Use cases to transport, use stands that are nitro compatible (those old surgical tubing as padding stands are no good), and I give them a wipe down with Dunlop Formula 65 when I change strings.

Modern nitro seems pretty hearty. I've even got a "thin skin" Tele that I've been bashing away on for over 5 years and the only wear I'm seeing is along the edge of the fretboard above the 18th fret (due to my pick hitting it). Other than that only little chips where it's been banged into stuff. My arm hasn't worn off the edge of the body, or the edges from sitting and playing, or even buckle rash.

I've even got a Highway 1 Strat that I've had since 2009 and I've had none of the finish worn through.

That's why when I see relics done the only way a guitar could look that "used' would be if you transported it around for a decade without using a case. Or maybe if you dragged it behind your car and left it sitting outside in the elements for a month.

Re: How do YOU take care of your nitro?

You know PTM, I got my 1997 Deluxe Strat Plus in 2000, and I recently realized it received 10 x’s more wear in those first three years than in the 18 years since. Some people are just harder than others on guitars. Even my main bass that I giggled with for years actually looks pretty good when it’s all cleaned up. Granted these examples are Poly, but still, I think some people’s sweat, etc. eat through faster than others.

Re: How do YOU take care of your nitro?

I honestly don't do anything. I mean, I'll wipe them down every once in a while with a dry cloth when I have the strings off, but my favorite finishes are typically open-pore, top-coat free and thin, so a little wear and tear is both unavoidable and just fine with me.

Re: How do YOU take care of your nitro?

I'll polish mine with a microfiber cloth every once in a while to keep the gunk off, otherwise not much of anything. I was originally going to say, "Play the s*** out of it!"
