How do you use your Guitar tone Pot?

I saw Stratman approach his tone pots very differently than I do.

He dials it all the way down dark, the brings it back up until he gets what he's after. I have always done the opposite, just turned them down to take the edge off.

After my last few wanking sessions, I'm now a convert to his way of doing it. It seems easier on my ears to add in what I want instead of taking away what I don't want.

Just food for thought. Many of you probably already do it that way.

i have everything on full blast on my les paul. But i roll the tone controls both to 9, so it just takes the tiny bit of edge off. I still need that bite.

Re: How do you use your Guitar tone Pot?

My approach usually entails a pair of wire cutters. ;) But not all the time.

Re: How do you use your Guitar tone Pot?

Volume and tone full, unless I am looking for a jazzy tone. Then I roll down the tone till I like the tone.

Tone pots? On a guitar? :laugh2:

I never use them on my bridge pickups, however, I have treble bleed caps on my neck pickups, so the tone control is usable to me to balance the effect of the treble bleed.

Re: How do you use your Guitar tone Pot?

I never used them either much, but try what I'm saying and see if it doesn't change the way you view that "feature".

Re: How do you use your Guitar tone Pot?

But if you don't like bringing the tone down at all, how would it change things. I mean, I prefer the brightness and crispness that go along with the tone cap removed or all the way open- the amp serves at the EQ of how much brightness comes out, except for the neck pickup which brightens considerably when rolling down the volume with the treble bleed cap.

Re: How do you use your Guitar tone Pot?

Most times I don't have one to worry about or I just have it cranked, but on the occation that I want to dial 'em in I turn 'em all the way up, then back it off until it sounds the way I want.

Re: How do you use your Guitar tone Pot?

My friend that plays a Jazz Bass always starts with it all the way down, then adds brightness (blues, classic rock style)

On the Tele, I leave it around 7 and dial from there, on the Les Paul, it's full out unless I'm looking for a less edgy tone (but after playing the Tele or Strat I almost never am, especially on the bridge)

Re: How do you use your Guitar tone Pot?

I rarely use my tone pot when I'm playing rythym...it's almost always full on. When I solo on the bridge pickup I'll sometimes roll the tone control down until I get that Clapton "Woman Tone" kinda thing. Lew

Re: How do you use your Guitar tone Pot?

I usually have those sweet spots that I know will sound good, but when I'm experimenting with it, it's always rolled off and then turned up to preference.

Re: How do you use your Guitar tone Pot?

On my Jackson, I never ever touch the tone pot - I'll probably clip it or replace it with an EMG SPC or such at some point. On my LP, I use them mostly for jazzy cleans with the neck pickup, in which case I don't need to roll it down much (the GFS Fat PAF already sounds nice and fat...hence the name :laugh2: )

On the Tele (when I play it) The tone pot is basically never at full, I always roll it down at least a little bit.

Re: How do you use your Guitar tone Pot?

tone ... pot ???

you mean.. there's use for that other knob on the guitar??

:lmao:
i dont even have it installed .. my current wireing is JB -> volume pot -> output jack.

Re: How do you use your Guitar tone Pot?

I roll down the tone down just a little on my bridge pup when I'm playing single note, overdriven rock ......fattens up the tone on a Strat. Otherwise they are full up.

Re: How do you use your Guitar tone Pot?

generally i use it like this :
neck bucker : turned down like 50 to 60%
bridge bucker : 80 to 100%

i used to think the tone pot is totally useless and redundant. but after using it a couple of times i found out that it is actually useful. LOL.

On a Parker, it doesn't much matter which method you use...the tone pot is responsive enough to make this an easy adjustment.

On LesStrat, I use Stratman's method.
