How Does Electric String Gauge Relate To Acoustics?

I've heard that on an acoustic, you should use a set above the gauge you use for electric. So, as I like 11-48 on an electric, I should be using a set of 12 gauge for the acoustic... Is this right?

But what about 12 strings? I looked around but couldn't find a 12 gauge for that..... what should I look for?

And finally, what's a good string brand for 12 strings? :D

Taylor uses Elixir lights from the factory for most 12 strings:

you should have no trouble finding light guage 12 string sets

I wonder where these "you should use..." rules come from. My electric guage of choice has fluctuated greatly over the years, but I've never liked anything besides 13-56 for acoustic.
