How does MIDI work with drum software?

Actually I'm alittle confused on how midi works in general. From what I know, or think I know, the keys on a midi keyboard, for example, are assigned to a certain sound through a piece of software. Am I correct? If so, do you assign certain keys on a midi keyboard controller to certain drums (i.e. bass, toms, snare)? Any help with midi would be appreciated. Thanks!

You can "map" sounds to the keys of a midi keyboard - as an example Native Instruments Battery is a drum software that has cells that are assigned samples that can then be assigned a note value. http://www.physics.smu.edu/~olness/www/02fall1320/TrevorChapman/MIDI Web Page2/midi/history.htm
I thought that's how it worked. I'll have to check out NI Battery, I'm not sure what I want to record drum sounds with, but I know I want to get a toneport. That link is helpful too. Thanks!

Realistic drums if that's what you're after are a royal pain in the butt to program. You might look into something like Stylus RMX and their S.A.G.E. expanders like Backbeat and Liquid Grooves. Also, the DFH and BFD drums...

I'll have to check out the stylus stuff. I was thinking about getting EZ drummer, maybe DFH if I could afford it.
