It's different from an eq. The lows don't boost or cut a frequency, it's more of a tightness thing. You can make it boomy or really tight without becoming shrill. And the presence is not just a high freq. it's more like rounding off the highs or making them more sharp.
Maybe some of the more experience eq guys can put it in better terms.
