It's different from an eq. The lows don't boost or cut a frequency, it's more of a tightness thing. You can make it boomy or really tight without becoming shrill. And the presence is not just a high freq. it's more like rounding off the highs or making them more sharp.

Maybe some of the more experience eq guys can put it in better terms.

Depending on your setup, sometimes you can find the rack version at a pretty good price online. There are a few different models but the maximizer part is the same on them all.

Back to the Question, I almost bought a 6534 a few weeks ago, so I looked into it extensively first. The 6505+ is buzzy, has deep lows and tons of mids, great for getting that scooped mid metal sound. The 6534 has a snarl or cut to it for a more modern metal/thrash sound that cuts through, it sits between a Marshall and a mesa in terms of tone and it has a better clean channel than the 6505 too.

^ This. A 6505 needs no gimmick toy boxes to sound good.

I can definitely agree with that. But at the same time, it allows you to get certain eq attributes without having to drastically alter the amps eq. The biggest thing it did for me with that amp was help me cut through the mix better. My tone stayed 80% the same but I could get a better mix with my other guitarist who also had a 5150 but was using emgs. He was burying me and the sonic stomp made up the difference.

Keeping the topic on the 5150 vs. 6505.

Is it true that (i read this somewhere) the tone knobs on the 5150 have a bigger sweep/impact on the tone, than the 6505's ?

. . . can anyone comment on that statement ?

Hmm... Really wish I could try both.. I liked the 5150s Ive played and REALLY like the 5150 III! Sounds like Id like the 6534 too, but not sure if Id like it over the orig.
I have a EL34 powerhouse, so prolly dont need the el34 one then. (dont need either..haha) But like that big snarly growl of the 5150/6505
