how good is a Duncan Custom Shop rewind?

Just curious, as I have a tele bridge pickup from a Fender CS Esquire that never did anything for me, so I was thinking of sending it in to the Duncan Custom Shop for a rewind.

I was also considering ordering a Don Mare pickup, and the wait time for those is 2+ months. Given that I've always been a Duncan fan, I figured I might look into a rewind from them.

It looks like the cost of a rewind is about $75 nowadays--for that I could just get a Broadcaster or even a Jerry Donahue tele pickup from Duncan. Would a rewind be a serious notch over other off-the-shelf Duncan tele pickups?

A notch over? No, it would be the same thing.

Rewinds are great when you need a pickup fixed. Like an old pickup you don’t want to replace. Or something for which there are no modern replacements, like an old DeArmond or something.

Otherwise just buy a new pickup.

with a rewind, you can get what you want. if an off the shelf pup does what you want, then id just get that. if you want a 9.5k #42 pe tele pup, then the rewind makes sense

Re: how good is a Duncan Custom Shop rewind?

A rewind only makes sense when your existing pickup is worth absolutely nothing, has unique cosmetics/costruction unavailable now, or is dead/not working.

Otherwise you will spend the same on the rewind vs a whole new custom shop pickup.....and the new pickup option gives you the choice of selling off or keeping an original in case of sale.

Of course a stock pickup is way cheaper

Depending on what Fender pickup you have, selling will more than cover the cost of a new Duncan.

Re: how good is a Duncan Custom Shop rewind?

That's good pickup that someone will want. I would sell it rather than modding it.

Someone above said that rewinds cost the same as a new Custom Shop pickup. That is not correct. Duncan rewinds are quite a bit less expensive than new Custom Shop pickups.

I hope to be able to answer the question in the thread title soon. I have two humbuckers in for a rewind now, and I am hoping they get done soon (it has been 6 weeks).

prepping for namm time is always super busy at the custom shop. what are you getting?

I am not in any rush. I just look forward to hearing the results.

I'm having two non-Duncan import pickups converted into underwound Seths. The stock bobbins, baseplates, keeper bars, and covers are staying, but everything else is getting replaced (coil wire, leads, magnets, spacers).

Decided to do it this way because the stock pickup covers are specific to this somewhat rare guitar, and they have 50mm screw spacing, so I can't just put the covers on most aftermarket pickups.

The bridge pickup will be a stock Seth Neck wind, and the neck pickup will be underwound to balance.

nice. look forward to hearing what you think. ive thought about an underwound seth for the neck before as well, with the right rig i bet its great
