How hard to paint camo finish ??

I'd really like to have a gray "urban camo" finish (black, gray, light gray) and wondered how hard is it to do ?

People seem to paint any number of things with a camo pattern but I really don't know how you go about it. Are there stencils that could be used perhaps ?

Anyone ever had any success with doing so ?

Re: How hard to paint camo finish ??

My brother camo painted a car by spraying it od green, then after that dried, he stuck wet leaves all over it, sloppily sprayed them black, then peeled the leaves off. It looked pretty cool.

I'm not suggesting that you stick wet leaves on your guitar, but to be creative :)

Re: How hard to paint camo finish ??

id start by coating the whole guitar in the lightest color you will use, light gray in your case. from there on i would actually use a whole bunch of silly putty to mask out the shapes of the camo on the guitar and spray the 2nd color. then repeat for the 3rd color. its going to be darn near impossible to do it with tape.

EDIT: just make sure to spray as thin coats as possible with the colors so you dont have different levels of finish.

I like the silly putty Idea.:approve: You could also get plastic Mylar ,And cut patterns into that. Then just overlay & spray in a random or predisposed pattens .

Not a fan of the whole camo-thing on anything but millitary gear, but let's say i join a band (that is a morph between Soulfly, COC & Deftones), and their "image" is the camo-thing, i will get my gear painted in the Tiger-stripe patters.

I once saw a clapped-out old pickup being pulled on a trailer on I-10 in Texas; typical beatup "deer-lease truck". From a distance, it was a generic DIY camo paint job. Up close, you could see the owner had steciled it all over using the pattern of pot leaves.

Good idea on the silly putty, that would be pretty cheap and easy to work with I think.

James, I dont really want a ready made camo guitar, though I will admit the urban camo ESP Vipers are pretty sweet

I'm planning on doing an urban camo guitar and then getting some airbrush art done over the top of the finish.

Sort of a WWII "combat rock" lol, themed guitar. Old army camo inspired paint job, some bomber style nose art and some simulated flak holes etc.

I think the end result should turn out really cool.

Re: How hard to paint camo finish ??

Do a google search for Duracoat and Lauer Custom Weaponry. They sell paint used to paint guns- and have stencils for a variety of camos. I don't know if I'd use their paint as it's epoxy based, but you could use their stencils- then maybe use some krylon camo paint instead
