How high is your action?

Re: How high is your action?

My 7 1/4" radius strats I use 3/32 bass side and 5/64 treble side at the 18th fret, then I make a bazillion micro tweaks to the saddles till I get the feel I want.

Re: How high is your action?

Alitte over 4 on both my Strat and Tele, about 3.7mm on the remaining superstrat...
Going from two 11-48's to the strat with 12-54...
I like that way...not that I hit them with lethal force either...just suits my playing...

jebus, that must sound pretty good. plenty of signal for your effects tweaking, i'm guessing?

Re: How high is your action?

Don't really know how high in actual measurements, I just go by feel.
I don't play Rusty Cooley type stuff, so I don't need uber super mega low action.
My action is low, but definitely not as low as it can go, because I feel it helps me to bend and do vibrato this way, while still keeping a relatively low action

Nah do not run that many pedals...
But I like big strings, 10-46 is the thinnest I can use without feeling I'm playing on rubber I guess...
But I can use them if needed(9-42), just like the pull of the big ones I guess:_)

apologies, thought you were a pedal guru for some reason

Re: How high is your action?

Can't admit to the "Mile High Club", but the ex and I got it happening
on a real tall mountain one time:friday:

I swear, there were iceicles on my testicles:eyecrazy:

Seriously though, I like to look at a string and it will fret where I want it to.
I do prefer flatter radi on my fretboard which still allows some resistance.

Re: How high is your action?

I general use flatwound 12-fifty-something strings. I raise the action until it doesn't buzz under my highest natural picking pressure. I've been told the action is kind of high, but that the neck on my guitar feels so great that after a few minutes they don't notice.

Re: How high is your action?

I have no idea what the numbers are and they change from guitar to guitar...

To me, no 2 guitars are the same...I set each one until it feels right then it is right...

This is how I see it too. You can't use a "magic number" to set action. Each guitar is different, and playing style plays into it in a big way. Do you like fret buzz? I don't! So I set it as low as I can get it without buzz, but if I really dig in it will buzz just a little.

The way to get the lowest action is to adjust the truss rod to where the neck has just the slightest concave dip in it. You also have to make it straight by sometimes giving a twist to the neck to get it there. And look for high frets or bumps on the fretboard, as those will cause buzz and prevent low action. When you get a quality guitar with good build quality and fretwork, you can have some of the most wonderful and comfy low action ever...and what a difference it can make in your playing. Some guitars will never see that low action, and some will flex so much with humidity changes that you will be adjusting the neck more than enjoying your playing.

Re: How high is your action?

I guess it's standard. I don't really go too high or too low. I like to play bluesy with lots of string bending and vibrato, but I like to shred too. So the action has to suit both methods.

Re: How high is your action?

2.38mm (3/32) on both low and high e's on my Epi LP. I seem to like it here.

A bit more than 2.38mm (maybe 2.5mm) high e, 3.17mm low e on the Sheraton. I didn't set up it up to my specs yet as I'm quite happy with where it's at now, but I'm planning to put some elixir .11's on it and will then play around with height (as well as adjust intonation, etc).

Both guitars strung with .10's as far as I can remember.
