Well, that works out good then, as I don't consider Gilmour to be in the upper echelon of guitarists. Most of his solos don't do anything for me. He just doesn't have the 'feel' or excitement that some of the other Brits do (or did back in the day). I think his niche was in the early Floyd psychedelic days. That he did very well.

Long enough to get to the next note.
However, the open A is irrelevant, as are all open notes. Where sustain really counts is in the upper register, from the 15th fret and up. This is where I prefer to have more sustain without having to use vibrato (or more precisely, wiggling the string against the fret to have it oscillate more).

Heres somthing to consider. i made that vintage plywood guitar assembly. It sustains forever, longer than anything i hace, but theres a hiatch biatch. The fundamental of the note is lost right away, and only the ghost of the note goes on seemingly endlessly.
Thats a lot lot different than my best guitars,. where the fundamental note rings out long, strong and true, and when it dies there aint that much left ..no cheap plinky endless junky guitar vibrations lots of you guys think is a good thing, but isn't.

When I had the EMTY blackouts in my PRS SE I tested the sustain.
On the g string, 12th fret, I could hold a note for a silly amount of time without vibrato, I'm talking like 1-1.5 minutes. Of course, there isn't really a player who would ever do that though.

True, but again, the acoustic sustain of an open string on an electric guitar is pretty meaningless.

Not as meaningless as its sustain through an amp. That is highly variable depending on lots of factors, and can easily be made to be as long or as short as you want it with certain effects. The acoustic sustain of an electric guitar says something about how well those pieces of wood and hardware resonate together. Electric guitars are still acoustic instruments.
But, regardless of the "meaning," it's what the OP asked.

The point was that you said "sustaining notes are boring", and Gilmour is a player with solos that often contain long sustaining notes - many of which are beloved by tons of people. You're entitled to your opinion, I'm just saying it's not necessarily a common one.

The only way to measure something like this would be something clumsy and mathy like "ratio of %dB gain drop to time"
That said, my guitars are as follows:

Useless exercise. Everybody would need an electric plucker that plucked with the exact same force... also the main reason why pickup output levels are impossible to gauge.
