How long has you Number One been your Number one?

8 years I think.

I've had this guitar for about two years now, but for most of the first year it hung on my wall, pickup-less. I got it fixed up about 14 months ago and it'll be my #1 forever.

Re: How long has you Number One been your Number one?

I started buying the parts in 1983 to have this bass put together;
it didn't get completed until 1985, but it's still my number one!

Re: How long has you Number One been your Number one?

Looks like a reissue of some sort because of the gold hardware and ABR-1; like the ebony board.

I put the gold hardware on there. It needed new tuners, and a new bridge, so I took a $300 paycheck when I was 17 and bought all new hardware for it.

Re: How long has you Number One been your Number one?

I have no #1. I am too much of a gear slut to ever settle down with just one ax. They all do different things, and I like to change it up frequently. In the top tier for me are the Destroyer, the RS-315, and the SAS-36.

Someday when Ibanez comes a-knocking to create the Dr. Vegetable Signature Model, it'll be based on the Darkstone for sure, but with a Destroyer/Iceman headstock.

Re: How long has you Number One been your Number one?

Hmm what time is it? LOL

I have a lot in rotation but if I had to sell all but one, it would be the 1988 Radius I bought new. So almost 25 years. But I have a lot of phases where different guitars are my go-to, and I don't play that Radius the most by any means.

Re: How long has you Number One been your Number one?

I bought my '68 Strat second hand in 1981, so it's been my No.1 for 32 years. I had a couple of Warmoth Strats made in the late 80s as spares, but I haven't played them for years. I tried to like an '89 PRS Custom that I bought new, but after a year or so I sold it. I'll take one excellent guitar over a bunch of inferior ones any day. I'm sure Brian May would agree!

I really have two depending on the gig. But the acoustic has earned me more dough over the years.

Since 2001. Taylor 310CE. For Solo work.

Since 2003 PRS C22. For Band work.

Gorgeous pic WahWah, always a pleasure to see that gem. It's funny, some guys lean more towards having a #1 and some would use a new axe for every song. Either way, glad to see so much love for so many great instruments.

It'd be cool to make a book of this kind of topic. There are a few coffee table books out there with stories about famous guitars. But it would be cool to have a book where each guitar player, or someone close to them if they aren't of this world any longer, gave a intimate portrait of their story of that guitar.

Yes, the bottom line is that there's no one right answer to that question. There's plenty of great players who have spent most of their careers on one particular instrument, and many more who have stuck with one model with just a few examples of it. Anyone who tries to tell you that it's essential to have a lot of different types of guitars is just making up nonsense. I'd like to be there when somebody tries to tell Angus Young he needs anything other than an SG. The last 3 times I've seen Jeff Beck, he used one Strat, with the exception of his one song tribute to Les Paul. He made that one guitar sound like a different instrument every few bars, because he has the hands to do it. We know he would have quite a selection to choose from, but according to his guitar tech, there's one Strat that he really likes, and the rest that go out on tour are purely for backup. Other guys will get great use out of a broad range of instruments. It really comes down to the player. An average musician will be able to make a bunch of different guitars all sound mediocre, and by changing around so much, will never get to master any of them. Some good players rely on different sounding guitars for different applications, and are able to make all of them work. As I said, no one right answer, just another choice of the individual.

The only thing you NEED more than one guitar for is multiple tunings when playing live.

Re: How long has you Number One been your Number one?

Since the day I bought her almost 30 years ago. It was love at first sight.

Back in 83 when we were both a lot younger.

For some reason she's held up a lot better than I have.

Re: How long has you Number One been your Number one?

Ain't got a #1 anymore. It really depends on what I feel like playing and what vibe I wanna go for. All my guitars have different vibes/mojos, and the one I'll reach for is heavily influenced by whatever mojo I gel with at the time.

But then, my playing habits have also changed a lot lately.

If/when I start up a band again, that'll probably change and I'll probably find one of my guitars to be more suited to the band thing than the others. We'll see.

Re: How long has you Number One been your Number one?

My ancient SG Junior with a JB in the bridge was the only thing I gigged with for over 20 years. Until I walked into a shop and fell in love with a Firebird Studio. It was instant love. Been playing this one for over 2 years now.

I disagree 100%.

If you play live you need a MINUMUM of 2 guitars set up and ready to plug in for EACH TUNING YOU USE. Preferably more, but uinder no circumstances less.

I didn´t pay admission to watch somebody restring his guitars because he wasn´t properly prepared. I down my beer and leave shows when I see people do this, because whether they come back or not is usually going to depend on alcohol sales and I´m not going to pay money now to have them come back later and waste my time again.

The only time I didn´t do that was when I BOOED MY BEST FRIEND off the stage for being so stupid, especially since I had warned him and even sold him my s470 the day before. He now owns more guitars than I do, partly because he instantly realized how right I was when that happened.:D

I toured with 6 guitars during the Suffersystem days (2 in E, 2 in D, 2 in B), and played IE gigs with 5. 2 dropped d, 2 dropped c, and my number one as the emergency backup that could be quickly set up for either tuning by a friend if the poo is airbnorne and I´m already on backup. And in all situations, having another guitar that I could just grab and switch the beltpack on made all the difference between a 10 second dropout when I wasn´t leading anyway and a 3 minute total break to restring that´s going to do nothing but piss of the audience, the rest of the band, and the club owners.

I see it as: If you´re going to get on stage and take money for it, then it´s your job to make sure that what you deliver is worth paying money to see, and restringing tutorials are free on youtube ;)

I've had my #1 for about three years now. Sometimes the green guitar pictured in my avatar pretends it's my #1 but my Rosewood Axis Super Sport keeps reclaiming the crown.

Thanks for giving me another reason for not wanting to play in a band that uses a bunch of different tunings. ;) That was one of many reasons why I quit my last band. My new bandmates assure me that they're not gonna go down that path.

Re: How long has you Number One been your Number one?

My current #1 was custom made for my by a local luthier. It was put in my hands in December of 2011. It's been my #1 since.
