How loud are semi hollow guitars?

Am considering a semi hollow (semi acoustic). Specifically a telecaster thinline. How loud are they compared to fully acoustic/electro acoustic guitars? Would a semi hollow struggle to keep up with an acoustic volume wise if they were jamming?

Re: How loud are semi hollow guitars?

yes. a semi-hollow or chambered guitar doesnt have much acoustic volume. a bit more than a solid body but nothing like an acoustic

Re: How loud are semi hollow guitars?

My ES-175, which is way bigger than what you’re referring to, wouldn’t keep up with an acoustic guitar.

Re: How loud are semi hollow guitars?

Yeah, even a full hollow jazz box makes a piss-poor acoustic. Semi-hollows even moreso.

Re: How loud are semi hollow guitars?

not a dumb question, and now you have your answer

Re: How loud are semi hollow guitars?

But remember, the two most important parts of a guitars volume are the source of the noise (the string) and how strongly the pickups sense the string (ie pickup output).

Remember that the string acts as an acoustic speaker and the pickup acts as a microphone. The biggest impact on volume will be the output of the speaker and the sensitivity of the microphone. Any interference from the body could only decrease the string's volume, not increase it. The effects of wood vibration would not effect the pickup at all, because it can only sense magnetic vibrations.

I have a Cort Yorktown which is a fully hollow body copy of a Gibson ES295 and it’s really very quiet as an acoustic guitar.

Years ago I played an old hofner archtop acoustic and that wasn’t very loud either.

That's because they are plywood tops.

Re: How loud are semi hollow guitars?

I miss understood your original post, I thought you meant electrical volume.

I have an ES-175 that I use for all acoustic work. Playing live I need to mic it, but it's a bit too loud to be playing after everyone goes to bed. I had an ES-330 a while back that rivaled my arched back Taylor in terms of volume, if your looking for something soley based on acoustic volume.

the 175 is a full hollow 3" deep guitar so id expect it to have a bit more volume but none of the ones ive played have been all that loud. kinda an odd choice to use acoustically to me. sweet guitars though! what taylor do you have? i have a few taylor acoustics and they arent as acoustically loud as my other acoustics.

I use the ES-175 mostly because it's so easy to play, the microphone handles the volume. As for the Taylor it's a Big Baby, nothing too special, but it works as a guitar should, so I'm happy with it so far.

Re: How loud are semi hollow guitars?

Guitars like the ES-335 are semi-hollow body. An Epiphone Casino is very similar in form factor but is consider a hollow body and they are a bit louder acoustically. Still not as loud as an acoustic, but perhaps loud enough for your needs. You might compile a list of hollow body guitars and see if they have anything around local you can try.

Re: How loud are semi hollow guitars?

thin body acoustics like the Yamaha APX500 arent as loud as big body acoustics either

heck I had a strat once that was louder acoustically than the semi hollow / chambered LPs I have
