Re: How many frets do you prefer?

As for the inlays, I like mother of pearl trapezoid or blocks on Gibson type guitars and clay or black dots in fender type guitars.
I Hate abalone in general and also hate MOP dots on anything, even though that's what most of my guitars have.

Re: How many frets do you prefer?

As many as looks best on the guitar in question. Function is irrelevant for me, as I never, ever play up there anyhow.
x2, I've never thought about it. I don't even know how many are on the custom-spec neck I had USACG build for me.

12 is about as high as I go usually, maybe 15 if I've been drinking

Re: How many frets do you prefer?

I rarely if ever play the two last frets on my 24 fret guitars. Both 22 and 24 work for me. 21 feels like it would be too few.

I don't really care for inlays and prefer most of the fretboard to be wood, but I really don't like dot inlays. I don't know if they're just esthetically unpleasing or look cheap.

Re: How many frets do you prefer?

i picked 22 but it doesnt really matter. as long as there is 12 then ill make due

Re: How many frets do you prefer?

I've only had as high as 22, but I'd probably like 24. I don't really find 22 or 21 even to be restraining. I'll pick 22 though.

As far as inlays are concerned, whatever works for the guitar. I am somewhat of a fan of the no inlay look, and I don't get lost playing on one as long as there are side dots. I am also a big fan of really intricate inlay work like what Daemoness does.

Re: How many frets do you prefer?

I'm happy with whatever, but I picked 24 because of the extra double inlays!

Very cool inlay work

Re: How many frets do you prefer?

There are times when those extra 2 frets are missed on my guitars, and for down tuned stuff a 27 fret guitar (like the Hamer Californian posted in the guitar section) is great. I say the sky is the limit although I own mostly 21 and 22 fret guitars.

24 - so I can play the tapping bit on Megadeth's - into the lungs of hell :naughty:

Re: How many frets do you prefer?

I play several songs that need the 22nd fret, but none that need a 24th.

Re: How many frets do you prefer?

22 for me. I *hate* the way the neck pickup sounds on a 24 fret guitar. So much so that I can't really consider any 24 fret guitar.

Re: How many frets do you prefer?

None at all. Frets are for wooftahs.

Re: How many frets do you prefer?

22 frets for me; above that they get pretty small for big hands. I like block inlays, makes them easier to see on dark stages.

Re: How many frets do you prefer?

Theoretically, 22 should be perfect since it allows for both traditional neck pickup placement as well as a D -> E bend on the high E.

This. I don't like how a neck pickup sounds with 24 frets, and I don't like the 'missing' fret on a 21-fret board. Inlays I honestly don't care as long as they're not gaudy and ugly like some of the LTDs and import Schecters. On second thought, maybe I care a little since I bought an SG Standard partly because I think the trapezoids look better than dots (or maybe the binding?).

Re: How many frets do you prefer?

I kinda stop going up after the 19th fret. I only really go up higher than that if I want to play the Painkiller (Glenn's solo). Another reason is that notes that high just kind of choke off and have trouble cutting through a mix.

Re: How many frets do you prefer?

I really only need 22, and I only get there on a few licks. I do dig the easier access to those frets on a 24 fret guitar though, something I noticed when I got a Jackson this summer was my hand position was better than when I have to get around the heel of my Strat or Tele at those frets.

Re: How many frets do you prefer?

As many as there are on the guitar in question. There are a few songs that require 24 frets, but those are few and far between and I don't play those anyway. I've got some 21 fretters, some 22 fretters, and a 24 fretter. The number of frets is only a reason I pick up one over another maybe once a year, unless I've decided to torture myself and learn one of the aforementioned 24 fret songs.

For errbody that says that they don't play much above the 12th fret, I've got a question for you. I have no issue with that philosophy, but I'm just curious, do you guys not play chords on the upper register? I love doing that.
