How many guitar players have a bass?

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

I have one I rarely play--a MIJ Fender Precision "Lyte". Beautiful instrument; every bass player I've ever showed it to is like, "Well, it's not as good as my REAL Fender Jazz/Precision, but can I use on the gig? My back is sore!" LOL!

NO!

Bill

Those are awesome bases. I don't care what anybody says.

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

I'm definitely not a bass player since I use a pick, but I have one (Squier VM Jaguar bass), it's a lot of fun and it's great for breaking out of writing funks. It forces you to approach things in a different way.

My helix has bass amp models in it so it was minimal investment for me (maybe $300 for the bass?). It's a no brainer at that point.

I think every guitarist should dabble in bass if they can afford it (and if you have multiple guitars and amps, you can). It's like saying musicians should play multiple instruments but it's the laziest possible application of that statement.

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

Ok so here is my real motivation as of right now. I had thought about getting a bass in the past but just never got around to it. Inhave always had a thing for 80's charvel guitars and I have been on a mission to find original cases for my guitars. Well I bought one that was listed on Ebay as a guitar case but when I got it I realized it's a bass case. Seller is cool and willing to take it back. However I was in my local GC yesterday and wouldn't you know there hangs a 1987 charvel model 1b bass. That would fir perfectly in this case.......so do I buy a bass that I dont really need just because i have an original case that will fit it?

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

I am a guitarist (primarily) but I have a bass (as well as other instruments : tabla, sitar, burmese harp & more... and for me the is also computer as a musical instrument). It is good to play several instruments and also good to have a main one.

Currently my bass is a mahogany neckthrough Epi Thunderbird (Indonesian). I chosed it by fascination for the Firebird design.

It is funny.
Well you can also get a baritone. It is quite nice !
Or you can re-sell the bass case.
But I think it is good for a guitarist to have a little knowledge of bass : It will help you when you work with bassplayers.

Yes, the answer is always yes.
Lol

Seriously, if you buy it and decide not to keep it you at least have the matching set when you sell it. As long as your buying price fit what you are comfortable with.

I have a fascination with the Sitar. I love how they sound. But wow, does it look complicated to learn.

If you have the $$$ lying around, that kind of reads like the textbook definition of fate. Snag it and see what happens. If the $$$ isn't there, re-sell the case.

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

I play both, and everything else I can get my hands on (some well, others not so much). I can't imagine not playing both guitar and bass for writing purposes -maybe not for playing out as a bass player -but when I write a song I like to work out or suggest to the other members or even record the beats, bass lines, and vocal melodies that came to mine when writing the song -doesn't mean we end up using those as a group but it's a cathartic thing to work through a song on more than just guitar.

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

I have a Washburn AB10 and a little 20 watt Peavey MicroBass I use for writing. I have always had a bass around for those songs you write from the bottom up.

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

Picked up bass a few years ago. Always been interested being a rhythm guitarist. Picked up a cheap MIK Ibanez ATK at GC, and recently brought an American Standard Jazz bass. Now angling for an American Special P-Bass and I should be covered!

Indeed, he did. And while he was really, really unconventional, his bass playing is very much what I like to hear in a band. I love to hear independent melody lines, almost like a cello. Mot of my tunes don't have 'normal' bass playing in them.

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

ive had a bass for maybe 20 years. had an old ibanez roadstar ii bass for years. then a musicman 5 string, and now i only have a epiphone rumblekat but it suits my needs fine. i have some nice bass gear though... gk 800rb and ampeg svt5pro heads, swr 4x10, ampeg 1x15 and two ampeg 1x10 portabass cabs with replacement speakers. the are eminence ch2010 hemp cone neo's and they sound awesome. of course, they stopped making them. i used to play bass in a few bands over the years. lots of fun but im a much better guitar player. i did have to play bass unexpectedly on a few blues gigs a few years back. the bass player was 19 and the casino had a strict over 21 rule so he wasnt allowed on the ship. my poor fingers got torn to shreds and were actually sore which hadnt happened since i was like 15. saved the gig though :D

And Paul McCartney, Carol Kaye, Joe Osborn, Greg Lake, Ray Shulman... lots of other.

The players I listed all started out on guitar.

I use a pick or fingers depending on the music.

Funny, the first instrument that I learned was the cello.

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

I started out on bass, and here I am almost 50 years later with all kinds of stringed instruments... Rooms full of them.
Same here. You, me and Jimi Hendrix. All the best guitarists start on bass. [emoji16]
