How many guitar players have a bass?

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

How much does the "Lyte" weigh?

I was recently inspired by the triple-pup Ibby LP weight loss thread to weigh my gear out of sheer curiosity... turns out one of my lightest guitars is a bass!

'87 Ibanez RD-707 (think "RG bass") ---- 3.55kg / 7.8 lbs

Actually....the lightest. 0.1 lbs lighter than my strat

I don't think I have ever weighed it, but several of my Les Pauls weigh in at 9.1 lbs, and it is substantially lighter than that.

3 basses: old USA Peavey Foundation J-bass, Squier PJ, and short scale Ibanez Mikro.

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

Having been a guitarist since I was around 16 and never even considering bass, I got my first bass several years ago and it sat unplayed until about 4 years ago. When my long time band with school mates fizzled out after around 20 years I got totally P’d off with the whole guitar and indeed music thing and very nearly sold everything but a mate threw me a lifeline and asked if I wanted to try a 3 piece with me on bass as he knew i had one and that it has sat there for years. Well I really love playing bass and especially ZZ songs and now have 4 Sandberg basses.

A liitle off topic, but What is really cool is that the band is really a scaled down version of the original band, my other guitarist, drummer and myself. We have a pretty good understanding of each other and instively know what each other will do and is capable of. So whilst I started off just playing bass in this band (and vocals) I was getting the itch to play my guitars so the other guitarist went and got a bass. So now we switch it up and I can use all of my gear.. a win win for me. Also, when we do play the crowd love the change in dynamic as we both know most of the songs on both bass and guitar, so as we have our own take on the way we play each song it never gets stale and keeps us on our toes! I use Eden bass amps with Eden and Epifani cabs but currently looking for a decent lightweight bass combo.

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

I started out on guitar, played acoustics for about 5 years and then started getting into electrics. I floundered around there for several more years and then my drummer roommate came home one night and told me that the band he had just started gigging with needed a bass player. I said, "That's fine but I don't have one and don't know how to play one." He told me to borrow one and get started. So I did borrow a bass and an amp and auditioned. That went well and suddenly I was a professional musician, or at least I was getting paid! Then I played bass in bands for many years until a keyboardist showed up that played bass and keys at the same time. Brilliant! That freed me up to play electric guitar in the band which was great. Currently I play guitar nearly all the time, unless we can't get a bass player to show up for something.

I own three 5 string electric basses, one with frets and two are fretless. It's all good!

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

I have always had a bass around, mostly for my recordings. I had an old 60's Hagstrom for about 30 years, then I bought a brand new Squier which I sold, a used Gretsch which I traded for a parts Strat. About a week ago I picked up an Ibanez Gio Les Paul looking short scale bass....this thing is incredibly great so far. It plays nice, set up easily, and sounds really good. I was shocked because it was a $125 used bass.

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

I don't own any. But I have GR55 that gives me bass sound to my guitar.

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

I have a 78' Rickenbacker 4001 bass......bought it because my buddy made me an offer I couldn't refuse, plus they are so darn cool looking!! He bought it new.......he knew I always admired it and when it was time to let it go he offered it to me.

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

I’ve had a couple of them over the years. My first one was a Cort short-scale (don’t remember the model or even how short... not full-sized but longer than a guitar) that I purchased in 1986. I loaned to a friend and never saw it again somewhere around 1990 or 1991.

Then in 2006 I picked up an Ibanez AEB10EBK acoustic bass. This is back when I was playing mostly acoustic guitar, and I had visions in my head of being able to have a whole “band” around a campfire. It was nifty, but it was too quiet when unplugged to be able to reasonably play along with other acoustic instruments. It was also very “stiff” to play, and I ended up trading it (after I bought my electric bass) for a 2x12 speaker cab.

In 2011 I bought an Ibanez SR300DX and never looked back. It’s got a neck that plays almost as fast as an electric guitar and it sounds great. I have a little 25 watt Crate BX-25 practice amp that actually sounds really good.

Why do I have it? Well ostensibly it’s for recording (which I rarely do anymore), but I actually picked it up for playing bass on my old church’s worship team. We had 2 guitarists (the pastor and I) and no bassist for the longest time so we took turns playing bass. I’ve now rejected the whole church thing, but the bass will most certainly stay.

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

I started on guitar at 10yrs old but got a bass at maybe 15. They’ve come and gone but I think at the very least, becoming a solid pocket bass player helps immensely with timing. ATM, I’m trying to put a bass rig together again after having sold mine years ago.

I still play it, however.

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

There IS one odd feature to most guitarists dabbling in bass: POS instruments that they seem utterly unaware are junk.... which is damn odd considering how much good stuff can be found in any price range.

I do see a rare exception here though, this thing looks SWEET:

Good wood, good bridge, good pickups... what is that thing? stock or modded beyond recognition?

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

I have one of the Epiphone Toby basses that I've used when writing or I've had to play bass. I dropped a couple Duncan QPs in and it sounds fantastic. It sounds better through an MXR DI+ than bass and rig combos costing a lot more. It may be junk, but it sounds great, is light and is comfortable to play.

It’s a History Jazz made in the early 2000s. It’s a Fujigen house brand for some store in Japan but I don’t recall the name. I bought it new in Sasebo, Japan in 2004. It’s stock aside from the electronics. I pulled the original active stuff and went passive with 2v/2t with the QPs.

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

I'm not a great bass player, but I have an Ibanez SR405(?) 5 string that I've had for years.

*EDIT* just looked, it's a SR495, that's like 90 louder, innit?

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

playing bass is way too hard...have to keep the beat with the drummer, lay down good backing lines and make it melodic all at the same time...it's like trying to play the piano with three hands as far as I can tell...it is one of the mysteries of R&R that great bass players didn't get the recognition their mid range associates did...

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

They’re too busy writing all the songs to catch much limelight.

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

I have a cheap Yamaha something or other I got used at GC for $100. Serves the purpose when I need to cut a bass line. Which is almost never.

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

Meet Lucy, my 2002 Spector Rebop.

She's still stock in these pics, but these days she has a brass nut, Gotoh tuners, and a Hipshot extender key. I also replaced the stock electronics with an EMG-35JCS in the middle, an EMG-35TW in the bridge, and an EMG BTS preamp. She's wired master volume, pickup pan, bass boost/cut, & treble boost/cut with a push-pull on the volume. With the volume down, the bridge is in JCS mode and she sounds like a Jazz Bass with a hint of Spector growl mixed in. With the volume pulled, the bridge pickup is in CS mode and she sounds more like a Lakland 4-94. I mostly use her for recording when I want a sound different from longcat's Spector NS-4CR-FM. I'm seriously thinking about having my tech reshape her neck, as the CRFM has a soft V shape that's much more comfortable than the C/D shape on the Rebop.

In the past I had an Ibanez Musician MC2924, but I could never get along with the electronics. The pickups were an unusual size and screwed into threaded inserts, so I decided to sell rather than make a non-reversible mod. I also briefly had an Ibanez SR-400, but I gave that one to longcat.

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

I’m primarily a guitar player, but have been exclusively the bass player in bands previously. I have 4 basses; 2 are primarily for recording, 1 is for playing live, and another is short scale and used for practicing/composing/noodling.

Re: How many guitar players have a bass?

Currently I am a bass player in an instrumental band for more than a year. And I supposed to be took in the band for a couple of upcoming gigs... and still I’m doing “a couple of gigs” with the guys, haha. The noodling on the bass (also recording the parts for my demos and the vids later) started six years ago helped me a lot.
