How many of you own a custom shop pickup?

Re: How many of you own a custom shop pickup?

I don't own one; but if I did, it would be a Jerry Donahue Stack...

Re: How many of you own a custom shop pickup?

I have a few of them and love every one. Worth the wait and worth every penny.

CS Jerry Donahue
CS alnico 2 Tapped Tele Hot
CS alnico 5 Tele ala Strat neck pickup
CS '78 Humbucker
Antiquity Humbuckers, Surfers and Texas Hots too.

They have just a bit more personality, complexity and texture than the also excellant stock SD pickups. Lew

Re: How many of you own a custom shop pickup?

I have a CS set in my Telecaster. They are mentioned on the CS page, their called the CS 53 Tapped Tele set, they were originally done for Jeff Beck...he has a 53 Tele and Seymour rewound the neck pup back to stock, and did the bridge pickup with alnico II magnets and a tap. The bridge has alnico II magnets and is tapped, one tap is at a little over 6k, and the other tap is a little over 9k. I got the "matching neck" which is based on Jeff's 53 Telecaster...it has Alnico V magnets and is just under 8k. I love these pickups, and can not say enough great things about MJ, and dealing with the folks at Duncan!

Hey Lou, tell me about your CS Jerry Donahue pickup.

Stevo...what is the LSPG? Also is it true that the Holdsworth is an A2 JB with 2 rows of screws???

Stevo, What are the Deco 2 and the diablo like? Can you describe them? I have been very interested in these two pickups.

Re: How many of you own a custom shop pickup?

I had an EVH, which should now be in the hands (or, perhaps, guitar) of theodie. I got it because I had read a lot of good pub about it and was curious. I sent a JB Trembucker in to be rewound, and they sent me a brand new pickup!

I was very happy with it, it's a great pickup. I sold it because I got a PATB-3 that, IMO, is *very* close tonally (in fact, the tonal differences were improvements for my needs); I didn't need two pickups that were so similar, and since the EVH is worth a lot more...onward it went.

I asked MJ to make it as an Antiquity so it has the aged look to it. I bought it to use in my '54 Tele and wanted it to look old and have the old style black and yellow cloth covered leads like the Antiquity. Lew

Very cool...

Re: How many of you own a custom shop pickup?

I bought an 89 MIA HM Strat from Mesa Boogie Hollyweird (one of their amp testers) that had Tom Anderson custom PUPs in it and it has my absolutely favorite HB PUP in it...

I have no idea about the specs on it, but it sounds like a cross between a JB and a Custom.

Re: How many of you own a custom shop pickup?

I have a custom shop EVH that I purchased from a forum member a while back. I haven't installed it yet, I'm saving it for an upcoming project.

Re: How many of you own a custom shop pickup?

I have a Custom Shop humbucker in a homemade baritone Strat. I was unsure what to put in the bridge (it's routed for a single, humbucker, or P-90 in the bridge slot), and after talking to Seymour himself at West L.A. Music (super nice, down-to-earth guy who [obviously] loves what he does) I decided on a humbucker wired with a mini 3-way switch for series/parallel/split operation. I told Seymour that I wanted rock & roll/rockabilly/country twang, not heavy metal chunk, and he recommended an underwound CS humbucker. I decided to go with Alnico 5 magnets so it'd be bright and twangy. I combined it with an SSL-1 at the neck and bridge with a switch that lets me use the neck and bridge together in the third position instead of the middle pickup alone. The humbucker (as well as the production single coils) sounds terrific.

I thought the el diablo had Rails?

Re: How many of you own a custom shop pickup?

The Diablo is pretty cool. It does not seem that hot to me. I think it's pretty articulate. It does not sound over-compressed or mushy under distortion. It sounds more "classic" rock to me actually.

The Holdsworth bridge sounds similar to a JB to me. I really did not spend much qualitly time with it while I had it.

It's like a little 59 with an A2 magnet. It's a pretty cool alternative to the little 59, but I ended up getting a 2nd tele that was routed for humbuckers :D
