How many of your bands have their own sound man?

Something Cool
I wonder what the 2009 situation is like?

If you play in band(s), what do you do for soundmixing? You have a guy that you drag around, like a half-bandmember? Whatever the venue has? What do you do when recording? One of you? Whoever owns the place?

If you have your own person for live, how many venues give you trouble and insist on their person doing it?

We do our own sound....I generally go out front and tell what we need EQ-wise as far as front of house.....then when I go to get my mic checked, the keyboard player gives it a listen....we have pretty decent ears when it comes to mixing.

I don't like to pay someone to mix us, unless it is someone who knows their business....and they usually aren't cheap!

Most of my gigs are in in small/medium pubs. We don't mike anything usually but will sometimes stick a mike in the kick drum. We don't soundcheck as we have a good idea of our relative and overall volume levels. However, in the last year I've played in some large venues that have really good huge p.a.'s and in general the venues' sound guys have been great. The worst offenders are small places with PA's that don't actually need them and they often have sound guys that are total jerks.

Crazy enough, my wife runs our sound. I personally trained her on hooking everything up and running the mixer. She does a darn good job at it too as we've received loads of compliments on our sound and the fact that we aren't too loud. She'll run the sound unless we play somewhere that has their own, like a festival, benefit or when we played at the Glass Cactus in Grapevine.

At our last gig, I was using my new wireless and decided to wander out front during a couple songs for fun and interaction. It amazed me how good it sounded out front.

We do pay her for doing it as well.

My last band, a 6 piece band had a soundman #7. We paid him what we got and at the time was quite a bit.($250.00-$350.00 per man) We were lucky to play casinos, concerts and corporate gigs. When we played the occasional club gig, we only got $800.00- $1200.00 per night. I realize that is alot more than the going rate today. We got the bigger money only 3-4 years ago. My how times have changed!
