How Many Overdrive Pedals Should a Man Own?

Re: How Many Overdrive Pedals Should a Man Own?

A big thank you once again to all SDUGF members for making me feel quite moderate in my behaviour where I was once feeling a little guilty over the amount of stuff I've been buying. I now realise that I need at least 4 more OD pedals just to be normal. Now, who's going to write a convincing note to my wife justifying the spends? A big gold star for the most convincing message.....

Re: How Many Overdrive Pedals Should a Man Own?

Here's a tip, buy them used on ebay, then when she sees a "new" one, you say "What, this old thing? I've had it for years." :D Works even better when purchasing relic guitars.

Re: How Many Overdrive Pedals Should a Man Own?

I just own a Bad Monkey with the Badder Monkey mod. I use it to boost my dirty channel on my amp. I do love the sound I get using it in front of the clean channel. If I ever to own a really nice single amp I'll probably run it clean and do 2 back to back ODs.

btw, has anyone use the EH English Muffin? I saw a great demo of it on youtube where the guy just ran it into a clean tube amp and it sounded pretty boss.

Re: How Many Overdrive Pedals Should a Man Own?

2 is a good number for either different tones or for layering up.

Re: How Many Overdrive Pedals Should a Man Own?

I own (3) ODs (2) Distortions and (1) Fuzz. Unless I build a second board it is excessive. Two overdrives and one distortion pedal are all I NEED on my board. Somehow I have calmed the pedal GAS .......... now its back to guitar parts.

Re: How Many Overdrive Pedals Should a Man Own?

...If you suddenly can't find your front door, bed, bathroom, CAR...something like that, then it may be time to calm down on pedal purchases. :p Otherwise, if one has the means - and the need - why would you limit yourself in as far as the number of "colors" on your sonic palette, for lack of a better term?
To set a number would be like saying, "OK, this one is reeaallly cool, and has some usable tones - but purchasing it would be frivolous, as I have SEVEN pedals at home that sound NOTHING like it..."

Again, why limit yourself? Sheesh, I have two, and I don't even use distortion pedals currently...don't try to stop me, either - I'm crazy! :nana:

Re: How Many Overdrive Pedals Should a Man Own?

Well I had probably a dozen or so at one point, but now I'm down to:

Real Tube 901
Ibanez SD9
Boss ODB-3
Behringer OD-100
Univox UniDrive
Shin-Ei Fuzz Wah
Plus what's in a couple multi-processors, and I want to build a Boss Tone in a pedal.

That'll do, pig. That'll do.

Re: How Many Overdrive Pedals Should a Man Own?

i have a sd pickup booster, sd twintube classic, and a zen drive ... if i had bought the twintube first, i wouldnt have bought the zen ... but i am glad it worked out this way ... the zen is just killer as a smooth od for single line solos ... the ch 1 of the TC is my dirty rhythm and the ch2 of the ttc is my screamin massive gain tone

Re: How Many Overdrive Pedals Should a Man Own?

the answer is 42 (see how many people get that refrence)
That's the answer to life, the universe, and everything.

As to how many overdrives, a painter needs all the colors on his pallette that are required to express himself. If he feels he can express himself with one, then the answer is one. If he needs a rainbow of colors, then he needs many.

Now, if you have 5 overdrives, and they cost $400 a piece, that is just too many!!! :poed:

:jester: I guess if the Boss and Digitech stuff just won't do, and you gotta have that $400 pedal, or a dozen of them, to each his own.

I have like 4 overdrives and 2 distortions, and the red Korg Toneworks G1 distortion processor, and a Korg AX300G which has distortions and OD's in it. And a Lava Box, which sounds like a fuzz to me. But for the single pedals, I think I spent between $20 and $60 for most of those. The two Korg products I got on clearance from one of the mail order gear places.

boss sd1
vox valvetone
barber ltd
voodoo lab superfuzz
duncan lava box
ibanez ts9
cochran timmy
dunlop fuzzface
visual sound rt 66
mesa vtwin

i think im forgetting at least one and i just sent payment for another dual od. that isnt counting the two clean boost pedals i have

since you dont use em you might as well gimme a couple!

Re: How Many Overdrive Pedals Should a Man Own?

well the timmy, ltd, and vox are on my pedal board which i seldom use but id hate to take it appart since its all wired up nicey nicey. i loan out most of the others as my friends need things. or if i get a call to do a certain type of gig (fill in type stuff) ill play all of em to find out what will work best for the gig.

you want the wasabi? pay shipping and its yours

Re: How Many Overdrive Pedals Should a Man Own?

Right now I've got it down to two...a Blue Tube tube OD pedal which stays on, and a Rocktron Austin Gold OD, which acts somewhat like a treble booster, to goose the BT for solos.

Re: How Many Overdrive Pedals Should a Man Own?

At least three. A boost, a distortion, and a fuzz.

Probably not everyones choices but I like mine.... Keeley Fuzz Head, M.I. Crunchbox and an MXR MIcro Amp for boost in to the loop. Also just got a good deal on another Micro Amp (well a Custom Audio version which I believe is the same?) which I'm going to try in the front to push the amp into saturation I hope!

I have a Micro Amp in front of my Mesa MkIII, and it does seem to push the 'Marshall' channel ever-so slightly over the cliff...:p

Re: How Many Overdrive Pedals Should a Man Own?

I have 24 od and dist. pedals, 3 fuzzes, and 2 EQs, and 2 compressors, which I use for gain at different times.
