im gonna change the strings on my charvel from 9-46 to 10-46 because i want a more solid tone from it. i use 3 springs set up like this, | | |, but am wondering if i change to 10's, should i go up to 4 springs like, || ||?

Re: how many springs?

I use 9 springs, I had trouble getting them all in though, I had to use super glue.

I use 3 springs with .10's

I'd just crank the claw in a bit.

Yeah, that should be all you need to do.

Failing that, you could try this / | \ to get a bit more tension out of the three without having to go to four... I think

Thats what I do, and I use light top heavy bottom (10-52) but I keep my trem floating, I know most people here do not do that but...it works for me!

Re: how many springs?

well, i definitely want my floyd floating ;)

you gotta love those noises from pulling it up and down, it's great!!

i guess i'll try the / | \ when i change the strings, i think i put 10's on it once(back when i used 9-42) and took it off and didn't have much trouble with them

Re: how many springs?

I use .009s or .010s in standard tuning with the springs arranged like this... / l \

The feel of the trem seems to be more "focused" that way. I've never had problems using it that way so I see no need to change.

Re: how many springs?

i used 3 string on my strat and when i moved to .010's the bridge floated, but so severly that it never stayed in tune, so i took it to be adjusted and it was fine. But now i use .012-.052, and those added weight of the hevaier strings causes it to float just a bit but it sitll stay in tune pretty well. Three will be ok, but take it to the store to get it fxed or set up right. I would prefer to have 5 springs though to be honest for tuning stability.
