how many winds for a 50's pickup

i was wondering if anyone knew how many winds a Fender pickup from the 50's had, cant remember if it was a 59 schematic or something earlier than that, thanks!

Re: how many winds for a 50's pickup

I'm not an expert but I don't think any pickup, be it a Strat, Tele, Les Paul or P-90 pickup had consistent wiring back in the day, they would just wind the bobbins until they were full and install them...

That being said the average was probably in the mid 6k range...

I'm sure somebody smarter than me will pop in with better info...

Re: how many winds for a 50's pickup

Im not sure. if you are asking about strat pickups or tele etc.
Strats went into production in 1954, thats 6 years where stats were being built in the 50s. Thats a lot of guitars too. Fender factory like most pickup manufacturers wound their pickups by hand , and the amount of turns often varied by a lot. There is no magic wind number for 1950s fender pickups. It can be anywhere from 5.5 to 6.5 k ohms.
Currently on the market for 50s style pickups there are a number of offerings from SD, as well as many other companies. These pickups all have slightly different wind values, use different wire, different magnets etc. Even fender itself offers both the CS54 pickups as well as the Fat 50s.
So what really matters is....what (50s style) sound are you after? There will be a pickup on the market that will replicate that.
Or if you really want to go deep...get some antiquities custom wound and aged for you after consulting with the SD custom shop...

Re: how many winds for a 50's pickup

a strat pup from the 50's will have around 7800-8500 turns of #42 formvar. earlier 50's typically had thicker insulation than later 50's

Re: how many winds for a 50's pickup

There is no ideal or magic number that will consistently plop out a "perfect" Stratocaster pickup, time after time. There are too many minor variables in the materials, the machinery and the human operators for that. Then, of course, there are the variables in the host instrument, the playing style and the amplification.

Re: how many winds for a 50's pickup

I was just wondering what the schematics were since i was gonna dabble around with making a humbucker using one coil matched as close as i can get to a 50s wind for one coil, then for the other i was just gonna try out different thicknesses of wires to see what i could come up with. Thanks for steering me in the right direction guys, probably should of mentioned it was a strat pickup

Re: how many winds for a 50's pickup

well that helps i should probably get started on it when the next check slides under the door, thanks a lot guys.
