also on a audiance size : pay ratio, how dose that work?
how big dose your audience have to be to make a decent bit of money?

When I played in a cover band I usually averaged about $60 for a 4-hour night but that was over 10 years ago. Now I play original music and the band plays 1 hour sets for free alcohol and guest list.. It's a lot more fun and better for the soul in my case.. ok sometimes we get paid but it's rarely ever worth the time that you put in.

4 hour night with 15 minute breaks between sets....$300 divided by 4 of us...This is the average..

we get the big amount of $0.00 playing 2 x 1/2 hour original sets every week... have played for varying amounts of pay from $600 for 4 hours of covers to $50 for a half hour set to $0 (all amounts listed as a per band amount which gets split amongst 5 guys or 2 depending which band it is i'm playing with)

however, where we play has the best stage/sound setup in town and audience sizes of up to 650 people (generally play to around 150-200)

The way the local place i play somewhat often it works that the band is given 50 tickets, and they owe the owner 150 bucks, tickets are five bucks do the band can make up to 100 bucks. Obviously bigger acts can ask more, but I'm happy for now just playing out.

It all depends really. I've earned $0 to just free beer to $500 per member.

jazz bands for corporate functions/proms are the best

can get from 300-500 bucks for a jazz combo (of about 4-5ppl)

haha the only time I got paid worth beans was when I did cover tunes that I did not like.. not good for the musical soul in my case. I never felt like I was moving forward, but just a piece of meat on the stage :burnout:

I've been doing the ticket-draw thing for years, but never once got outright payed for gig, which is the way it is today for all-original bands, signed or not. Having a label behind me has helped a lot in terms of promotion and endorsements, but not a whit for compensation!! Go figure ...

That being said, I wouldn't change a thing. I love going up there and rocking out and giving people a good show!

Some musicians enjoy doing covers at casual lounge gigs and weddings or the like. That's cool too, if you have fun with it and gig money is important to you. When I did it, it became a grind and I did not want to play in my spare time.. that sucks.

When I played with the last band, we started playing covers along with the originals after we were able to convince the lead singer. we play 2 gigs with covers.. 1 was a 2 nighter (3 hours each), we ended up with $1000 for both nights and the other gig we played we got $500 for playing 3 45 minutes sets.

The only thing is both gigs we got ripped off by the lead singer since he was the leader/manager of the band and he said he deserves more.. and thats 1 of the many reasons why we (me, bassist and drummer) left that band.

My band has played quite a few free shows. We made $200 for playing a 4th of July gig last year, and made $375 by winning a local Battle of the Bands. Usually, we take in about $40-50 per paying gig.

at a once in a liftime opportunity to play at a "Christian" talent show (the thing was rigged from the get go) me and my band played for $600 each. Hasn't happened since, and probably never will.

Most I ever made in One night was $80. But most of the time it's chump
change. But we always cut a deal with club owner THE BAND DRINKS FOR
FREE !! :beerchug: This way if you feel you desevre a raise... JUST DRINK
MORE!! :laugh2:

BTW Freak'in DJ's make like $500 a night?? Club owners have no problem
paying that!! :evil: But they won't think twice about Nickel and Dimeing
a Band :yell: ( Major pet pevee of mine)
