How much do you use the middle pup by itself?

On either an HSS, or an SSS configured guitar, how much do you use the middle pup by itself?

The reason I ask is, I got the tapped Quarter Pounds for my Peavey Genny, which I'm going to install with a Stag Mag at the bridge, (I think). I'm going over all the different wiring combo's that I like, but I don't want the control layout to be too crazy. One of the ones I like best would mean that the middle couldn't be used by itself.

As it is now, I almost never use the middle by itself on my Genny or my Strat.

How 'bout you all? :)

i use the duckbucker by itself in my HSH 540s for clean comping when i want 'that' sound ... it is 'ok' with a little grit for bluesy soloing, but not my 1st or 2nd choice tone for that use .. it does get good 'stinging' attack though

good luck,

I use my middle pickup for all the rhythm, and the neck pickup for all the solos and beefed up leads. I never use the strat bridge pickup, I never can find one beefy enough, and when I do, it's too beefy.

Re: How much do you use the middle pup by itself?

Yeah, I don't use the bridge much in my Strat either, but I'm hoping to change that in my HSS Gen. I just gotta get the right bridge HB in there to compliment the QP's. ;)

Re: How much do you use the middle pup by itself?

I dont really use the middle pickup at all by itself.

Hello buddy....I almost never use the middle pickup by itself, except on my Surfer middle/neck position strat...The surfer middle and neck pickups are fabulous...Other than that it's only the middle and bridge pickups together..

Great . . . so I think I'm going to go with this diagram I made up. It's a real simple way of using an ordinary "Alco" 3-way to select between:

1. neck/middle in series
2. neck only
3. neck/middle in parallel

And that switch will be used with one more 3-way to select between that switch, and the bridge. Should work great. ;)

Re: How much do you use the middle pup by itself?

I use the middle on strats for most rhythms and some solos, but usually I use the neck for solos.

Re: How much do you use the middle pup by itself?

I use it quite bit if it's hum-cancelling, it tend to like it for a different lead sound, especially a midrange enhanced overdrive, or with some tight compression ... as far as the tone control goes in complementing it ... Bright for more chordal stuff (yes lead still), and dark for single note lines.
If I play a regular S/S/S or H/S/H guitar that doesn't have a a hum-cancelling design (the pup by itself ... e.g. stacked, side by side, DMZ V.V. series) then I won't use it by itself. I think Jimmy Vaughn uses it a quite a bit, and Buddy Holly did, but that's about it as to the norm. I'd like to add that it doesn't get in my way, which is a comment I hear from a lot of people, I don't get it, but hey,if it bugs them, it bugs them. :cool3:

Re: How much do you use the middle pup by itself?

I use it for really clean chimey rythm playing (I have no tone control on this pickup).

Re: How much do you use the middle pup by itself?

Well, back when this was all theoretical, I had just about talked myself out of having a "middle-only" position. Now that I've actually installed the QP's, with the Stag Mag, (My Generation - Part Deux), I realize that whether or not you use the middle, depends a lot on the quality of the middle pup. My middle QP sounds fantastic. ;)

The neck, neck/middle, and middle, are like three flavors of the same "chime". Each one different, but similar. Now I'll just have to figure out the best way to do the split/tap thang.

btw - thanks for all the responses folks.

What middle pickup? :)

Re: How much do you use the middle pup by itself?

yea john, the surfer middle is real sweet! You can get a snappy, quacky tone that's not thin like the bridge. But under high gain with my Digitech hotrod i prefer the bridge for chording.

Re: How much do you use the middle pup by itself?

normally never, i only use the enck ick up on tis own or the bridge pick up on its owns, its too hard to switch to the middle pick personally.

Re: How much do you use the middle pup by itself?

It all depends on the individual pickup maker. My Wagner SRs do a great rhythm on the middle (by itself).

Re: How much do you use the middle pup by itself?

Never. I don't have any guitars w/ a middle pickup....they're all HH or H. Even when I did have a HSH guitar I never used the middle p/u alone.

Re: How much do you use the middle pup by itself?

i have a HSH, and its a MIA stock fender SC in the middle... has a really nice 'jangle' the buckers don't have... removes all temptation to try and use a SC bridge for clean rhythm :)

Re: How much do you use the middle pup by itself?

I use the middle pickup by itself quite frequently on my G&L's. I wish my three humbucker Dean Cadillac, was wired so I could use just the middle.

Re: How much do you use the middle pup by itself?

i use it in my strat a lot for solo's with a little less warmth than my neck

Re: How much do you use the middle pup by itself?

I use mine a lot on my squier... makes nice for funky rhythms and some solos for a bit of spank

The real test will be if I use it on my H/S/H Gordon Smith :/
