Re: How much will a luthier/guitar tech ask for putting on block inlays and a neck bi
I bought a Jackson RR3 Pro in early 2007 (2004 model, black, lic. Floyd, DD pickups) and though I like the guitar I thought it could be better both in appearance and function. The trem knife edges were a bit worn, so I dropped a Floyd Rose Pro in its place. I didn't like the DD pickups, so I replaced them with SD TB4(b) and SH1

in zebra/rev. zebra and put in new push/pull pots wired for coil splits and Artie's 'virtual third' humbucker.
That took care of the function, so the looks was my next target. Last winter I decided to try my hand at replacing the MOTO inlays with South Pacific MOP. I read up on everything I could about inlaying, and I mean everything. Once I psyched myself up to go ahead and do it, there was no looking back...lol.
Here is a writeup (with pics) that I did on the project and the results (excellent IMO).
After that project, all I had left to do was paint. The paint on the back of the top wing was chipped (no wood missing though!), buckle rash on the rear (from the PO) and the black finish just wasn't cutting it for me. This is what it looks like
after I painted it last summer, with
this shot showing some of the beauty of the MOP inlays I installed.
Note: The pics look jaggedy unless you click on them for a full size view (800x600).
If you are good with tools and want to learn how to do your own guitar work, get a good junker to practice on. I really enjoy doing my own stuff, and though I had never done inlaying or ever painted a guitar before I am good with tools and I have painted cars so I decided to give it a try.
The inlay work cost me about a hundred in supplies, and the paint work was probably about 250 (expensive paint and additives) with lots of leftover paint and supplies. My time was mine to waste and it was time well wasted! People like to tell me that I will never get my money back out of it but I did not do all of this to turn around and sell it, this baby is going to our son when I am no longer able to play it.
Just thought I would bring up that option as a suggestion for you to consider.
