how much will a power conditioner work?

Reckless Abandon

My marshall is modded so there is noise, constantly. I usually deal with it. Even recording the hit hats cover any noise but if it is a start and stop riff with no drums, then I have some noise. Playing in my guitar room is great but the noise is always there. IT is not the cord, not the wiring, not bad pot etc. I changed all of the tubes. I called voodoo (they did the mod) they called back and said "what noise"? So.............

Will a power conditioner help? I just moved to a new house and I still have the noise. It is almost like I have single coils.

thanks!

Re: how much will a power conditioner work?

Noise is the result of high gain sitting at idle, and just so you know, it varies depending on how good the circuit design is. One thing you'll notice about high dollar boutique highgain amps, is that they run quieter, despite the highgain they're capable of.

A power conditioner probably won't do anything, maybe not even lower the noise of dirty house electricity.

What you want is a HUSH noise gate......and buy the best one, not the cheapest. You create a threshold level that the noise can't creep past. When you start picking, the noisegate opens up. When you mute your strings, the gate kicks in, and cuts off all the hiss. Buy a Rocktron Hush unit.

I heard those things were start and stop herky jerky things, if that makes sense. I have never tried one. tell me more

Re: how much will a power conditioner work?

A power conditioner will help minimally at best, what you need is a noise gate / Suppressor like the aforementioned Rocktron units, a Boss NS-2 or an Alesis 3630 (personal favorite)

Re: how much will a power conditioner work?

A power conditiner always help but with a guitar amp it will never help to the degree it does with a stereo or HT setup. The irony is that when we play guitar, we want "noise", clipping,THD and other nasty little gremlins that the high end stereo guys spend tens or sometimes hundreds of thousands of dollars trying to eliminate. Stuff like rebuilding an entire part of yourhouse to improve the sonics of the listening room

Wait, will a noise gate help him if it's the amp that's humming? I understand with noisy pedals and pickups, how does it work with a noisy amp? Does it go in the effects loop?

If the hum source is pre-powersection, yes... if the Poweramp is humming he´s SOL ;)

Re: how much will a power conditioner work?

I may be sol then. As I turn up the master I get more noise, but the gain does it as well. I have to do some experimenting I guess
