How often do you replace your output jack?

Re: How often do you replace your output jack?

I replace cheap jacks on cheap guitars first thing when I get them. Other than that, never.

Do you have really acidic sweat by any chance? In one of my bands, the singer/guitarist constantly has problems with his jack because his sweat is very corrosive and it ends up getting into the jack over time.

Only ever had a grounding issue in 8 years of playing.

Try a better cable. Burrs on your plug may damage the connection. Monster cables rarely have this issue. And when those go bad...well it's time to take a trip to GC for a free swap.

Re: How often do you replace your output jack?

I've been playing for over 50 years and have never "had" to replace a jack.

One suggestion....secure your cable to your guitar (ex. under your guitar strap). Don't let it just flop around dangling out of the jack...too much stress on the jack.

In Florida the humidity is really bad on electronics as a whole...I do have to clean jacks and pots once in awhile...I've also had to resolder wires on the jack, but unless it's a cheapo jack,I can't say I ever replace them..

Happens to me, too, though not as much as it used to, since there're more geets around to spread the abuse. Switchcraft jacks handle it much better than the cheapo equivalents. I'd also make sure the OP is running the cable through the strap. Running a long, heavy, straight plug into a top mount socket will eventually wear it and cause a crap ground connection. Either run the cable through the strap, use a right angle plug, or both!

Side note: I don't know if it's related to my gnarly acid sweat but I also developed nasty acid reflux in my early 20s and it's pretty much eaten my singing voice. Your singer ever have any heartburn problems?

Re: How often do you replace your output jack?

I've found that poor connection is usually due to the spring metal being bent back in the housing, which can be bent back true, or variance in jack diameters due to plating or manufacture imperial/metric conversions etc. Never had to change a socket outright though. I did pick up on the planet waves issue though, but have not had a cable in use consistently on one guitar long enough to tell yet. Hope you find a solution.
