How the heck to install single braided pickup?

I got a 59N and it has a single silver braided cable. How the heck do I install this? I'm used to four cable installs and have never installed a single cable. I'm assuming I'm soldering the wire to two points - toggle and back of tone switch?

Below is the cavity.

Toggle is on the bottom. Tone is to the right. It's a Jackson Dinky (JS32)

The center wire is your Hot [ to toggle ], the outside braiding your Ground. [ to back of pot or any other ground point. ]

These pickups can be really tricky. I have had many a soldering nightmare with these kinds of braids. Some that I have had would literally disintegrate if you tried to cut and then squish them together. With mine, I just gave up and soldered a wire to the braid itself and then connected that to the volume pot instead. Works fine and is soooo much easier. At least for a soldering novice like myself...

Re: How the heck to install single braided pickup?

It's easy peasy: The center wire is the hot, and the exterior braid is the ground. Far preferable than five-wire to me. Nice, big wires with hearty pushback cloth insulation. No having to monkey with those tiny, fragile wires and their insulation that has to be stripped and that melts far too easily, no soldering the middle two wires together, etc.

That said, I prefer Fender's style even more, as it features the easy to use cloth insulation, but also keeps the hot and ground separate.

Scuff up a pot and put a little puddle of solder on it. Push the braid back enough to give you something to work with.
Ground the braid to the pot you put a puddle on, be quick about it and don't cook the pot. Solder the inner wire to your toggle and you're done..
Nothing to it, I prefer this kinda wire.. As long as you're not doing any coil taps or splits this is the fastest way to wire a pickup in..

I wish companies would offer their pickups in both versions.

Re: How the heck to install single braided pickup?

Actually we do. Any of our 2 conductor pickups can be ordered with 4 conductors.

Well I meant the 4 conductor pickups as two conductors. Like if I wanted a two conductor Distortion, I'd have to get it custom made.

Got it! Thanks everyone for your help. It was easier than expected, just wasn't sure.

Yeah, but other than it being slightly easier to solder, what is the advantage?

Hi, just resurrecting this thread. With this sort of pickup, a single coil humbucker (Seymour Duncan Vintage 1959 Blues), I am 100% sure it has a short in it. (brand new also). Any clues on pulling this pickup apart and putting new wire on,..???

Re: How the heck to install single braided pickup?

Do you have a meter to test it? I'd hate for you to have to pull it apart if that isn't the issue.

Re: How the heck to install single braided pickup?

Just wanted to point out that it is not necessary to pull the braid from the wire such as above. Just trim it back some and ground to the pot for a clean install.

^ This is what I've always done...

Re: How the heck to install single braided pickup?

Hi Mincer, Yes I purchased a multi metre the other day. When I test the pickup on the 2K resistance setting I get a reading of zero. When I test it on the continuity setting I get the ground beep. Meaning there is a short in there somewhere. On the other pickup, (neck pickup), testing that I am getting a reading of about 7.8 and the continuity on that one is fine. I bought two sets of these Seymour Duncan vintage 1959 Blues pickups on Ebay Australia. I bought them end of last year but it took me some time to finish building the two guitars. The return policy was only 30 days. So if I am to go down the path of pulling this pickup apart, any guidance on what to look for and how to connect a new lead to the pickup.

Also I was misled by a chap in the Jaycar electrical store down here when I was purchasing my new soldering iron. He said to leave the outer braided on all the way to the end (to where I was soldering the inner active to my selector switch points). This is after I soldered the braid to the pot. I can now see this was incorrect. Would that make a difference on the sound I am getting?
