HOW TO: Bypass the Blackouts Preamp

Re: HOW TO: Bypass the Blackouts Preamp

This is the whole problem... even with this supposed solution. Its anything but easy. But then again the BMP1 was never designed for it either.

As it stands EMG has add on boosts etc that you can install easily and use. Not sure why they arent more popular with the i want active and passive crowd.

the emg just boosts the tone. the bmp really makes it active. does something really different.

Yeah you need to brush up a bit on what actually defines an "active" pickup and how that relates to whats being said. In the end both are preamps of sorts though they were never designed to do exactly the same thing but categorically speaking they are in the same realm.

But this is still just a side argument to my point anyways. The BMP1 is not easily switchable. If someone is after a simple way to boost or mod the tone of their guitar and have the ability to switch it on and off at will i wouldn't recommend the BMP1.

Re: HOW TO: Bypass the Blackouts Preamp

We arent talking about EMG's. We are talking about passives and be able to go from active to passive.

Not sure what thread you are reading but this isnt applicable to whats being said here at all.

You started talking about EMGs. Their boosters are just a passive preamp. They aren't more popular among EMG users (as I explained) because they do nothing that an external booster won't do + they add to the already existing hum. Passive users just go and install a hotter passive pup + there are cheaper alternatives (of equal or better quality) for on board boosting, like artec. I guess this answers to your question about their popularity. Makes more sense now?

Re: HOW TO: Bypass the Blackouts Preamp

Actually, I spoke at length with the designers of the afterburner and the BMP. Conclusion? Totally different devices. Yes, both boost the signal but the afterburner boosts only and nothing more. The BMP takes the signal from each individual coil, processes that and puts those signals, boosted, in parallel. The BMP imparts its own character into the tone whereas the afterburner just boosts the tone with little 'coloring'.

Sorry.

You should be... Are they not both preamps? Where did i ever say they did exactly the same thing? Dont be obtuse and try to muddy the issue. The point was they were both preamps. Now tell me either they are or they arent.

Just stop dude.... They are active preamps they have a freaking battery!!!!! that by its very self is the definition of "active" and not passive.
No one is talking about EMG pickup users. I was talking about adding them to passive pickups. How many people do you see using any sort of active add on to passive pickups? That arent bass players. Its pretty rare among guitar players and speaks more about biases toward active electronics in general.

and my original comment was that their are easier ways than making a BMP1 switchable if you want to have an added active boost to your passive then the BMP1 is a bad choice.

Yup. Both amplify the signal beforehand. But they are not the same kind of preamp nor designed with the same idea in mind. That's all I'm saying.
