How to Drill Holes for Tuners with a Mounting Pin

I have a new Warmoth neck arriving on Monday, and I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to drill holes for the mounting pins on the tuners. I'm using Schaller locking tuners with a single pin, going onto a Warmoth shape headstock.

I'm hoping for a better method than eyeballing the alignment. I know they sell a drilling template for use on Fender style headstocks...any ideas?

The back of the neck looks like this:

And these are the tuners:

Thanks guys.

i did exactly that; eye balled it. done it twice! same tuners, same headstock shape. both times they were perfect as far as i could tell. unfortunately since the tuners aren't in-line you can't use a straight edge.

your best bet would probably getting a small level, holding the neck upright so that the flat fretboard end is sitting on the floor, and checking to see that each tuner is perfectly level from there. if you hand tighten the tuners you can move them without having them slip around.

Thanks Jay. Unfortunately I can't hand tighten them all the way in because that pin gets in the way. The hole for the pin has to be drilled before the tuners will fit into place.

I've been wondering this for a while. is there any way to get results with non specialized tools?

I suspect it would require talent and/or ingenuity, and I wouldn't know anything about that stuff.

Would that alignment tool be helpful even on a peghead shape like the one I posted?

I guess if I put the tool in place I could straighten it with a ruler before drilling.

Exactly. The reviews on the site say that its a good idea to buy 2, since when you put one in one hole and another in the one on top, they straighten each other out.

i see now! sorry, didn't realize. i bought very similar tuners from warmoth, but mine had a screw instead of a pin. guess i should have checked the picture more carefully! anyway looks like that jig might be the perfect thing though

With a drill good sir. (Note: a drill press will provide superb accuracy)
