How To Fill Excess Strat Routing?

Re: How To Fill Excess Strat Routing?

Considering the fact that the JV strat is somewhat of a collectible and sought after guitar, I wouldnt do anything permanent to it.

I believe you, But, doesn't that go against the tone purist's recommendations. You wouldn't order a swimming pool routed guitar would you? if you are an SSS guy then the order would call for the least routing you could get away with.

Are some of the purist's (a la Ed Roman) who speak against swimming pool/ excess routing...how do I say it...wrong on this.

I don't think that I'll actually be doing anything fill in the excess routing.

Well yes even Fender started to go back to the standard 3 strat pickup rout under their American Standard pickguards a few years ago saying that the extra wood helps tone.... It may very well do so but it is not all that makes a strat sound great. I think the better a piece of wood is the better it will sound.... the rout under the pickguard is a minor detail. I like stock strats as well as humbucker modified strats.... Under all my Mexican Fender pickguards is the standard rout you have under the JV Strat..... They could put either humbuckers or singlecoils on the same body at the factory depending on the model they are making. That makes it easy for them.....

I myself if ordering a Warmoth body would most likely have them rout it out for humbuckers like Fender does...... that way i could change in the future if i wanted to add full size humbuckers by just getting a different pickguard and not have to rout the wood out at home after the paint. Sure if i wanted a stock total vintage strat i think i would want the extra wood left and not routed out for Humbuckers..... There is a ton of other details i would want as well! More important to me would be the quality of the wood, Nitro finnish, neck shape, the metal the bridge is made of, and the right pickups..... After all that i would worry about the routing...

On a side note what is the neck shape on the JV strat like? Is it a vintage V shape? If it is i may pick one up.

Pete Townshend has long been my favourite guitarist..... His acoustic and electric playing is so much more then the 3 chord rock playing people say he plays.... Try playing Young Man Blues..... amazing player! Anyways now in his old age he has a Fender Vibro King stack and uses Modifed Fender Clapton Strats.... They are custom versions i believe as he has them in Gold colours that are not stock Fenders. He has the older Lace pickups, Sperzil locking tuners and a 2 post Fishman bridges...... Above the jack he has a peramp rout behind the bridge..... This area is thought to be the most important area for tone but behind the bridge he has them rout out a big hole for Batteries and an EMG preamp/buffer for the Fishman..... His sound is amazing!!!! The soundboard Who shows he sells thru his web site sound amazing and they are rough mixes! Offical Bootlegs they call them. Way i figure it is some guitars are hollow anyways so that rout i guess is not that bad.....

If you wanted to fill any of it with anything, fill it with lead! It'll make that sucker heavier, and give it some sustain.
