Anybody know how to filter 1 coil from hum bucker without changing sound of
the other coil (all in series) I am looking for less highs from one coil
thanks

Re: HOW TO FILTER ONE COIL ONLY F/HUMBCKR?

you have too many highs from a pickup and have narrowed it down to a particular coil?

please enlighten us on how you came across this revelation

there are ways of reducing highs in a pickup
a modified treble bleed comes to mind

Re: HOW TO FILTER ONE COIL ONLY F/HUMBCKR?

You're talking about running only one coil through a tone pot? Then wiring both coils in the normal series?

Re: HOW TO FILTER ONE COIL ONLY F/HUMBCKR?

It cant be wired for just one coil to have less treble than the other unless you use the pup in parallel. What i would do is air the one coil or use in parallel

Actually it is a hum bucker and I want to reduce highs on one coil,
without affecting the other (both coils are in series)

Both coils are in series, I need to cut some nights out of one without
affecting the other, i think they call it a broad bucker

I need to reduce hight only on one coil of the hum bucker without changing
the other coil ( 2 coils in series)

Maybe a cap in series between the 2 coils ???

That is the ONLY way you can do it but be careful if it is vintage braided wire you have to connect the cap at the coils crossover inside the tape. if you have a modern 4 wire it is no prob just connect it between the red/white that normally get twisted together to connect the two coils
:)

got that

my question
was ;

what

makes

you

think

its

that

one

coil

as

opposed

to

the

whole

pickup

?

Re: HOW TO FILTER ONE COIL ONLY F/HUMBCKR?

you can place a cap across that coil only, i.e. from coil tap either to ground or to output, depending on which coil you want to tame. Try values between 47pF and maybe up to 470pF or even 1nF. You can add a resistor in series to limit the effect of the cap in case you want to chop wider frequency range (with a bigger cap) but not chop too much dBs. If you opt for resistors, useful values would be in 47K-470K or something like that. In any case, experiment with alligator clips until you find the right values and then the components solder in. That way it's easy to test the effect comparing to the original sound, just remove one clip.

Re: HOW TO FILTER ONE COIL ONLY F/HUMBCKR?

I'm not sure you can do that without a powered 9v buffer or something. I don't think you can isolate it to one coil. All the electrical values sum. DiMarzio adds iron to the coil to increase the inductance and lower the treble output.

I like the "air" idea, it's safer. ;)

Re: HOW TO FILTER ONE COIL ONLY F/HUMBCKR?

why not? it's a low pass filter, why do you need 9V for that? tone pot works without 9V and is based on the same principle :)
safer in which way? he can try adding ca/resistor without desoldering anything already connected there. For air he'd need to bust the whole pickup open.

cheers

Re: HOW TO FILTER ONE COIL ONLY F/HUMBCKR?

actually the invader neck has a cap across one coil, not sure what value or which coil but its totally doable, either on the pick at the leads or at the end of the lead if you have 4 conductor.

I've got to say the invader neck was my least favorite pickup ever, even worse than stock epi guys and still somehow worse than a JB. But it was a 7 string version, maybe it is tuned differently than the 6 string version.

Re: HOW TO FILTER ONE COIL ONLY F/HUMBCKR?

but still
how would you tell if its one coil or the other
or the tone knob
or the amp
or the fact your not in an amp and plugged straight into a PA
or something totally different

I think the OP has an undescribed common problem
that he is trying to remedy in a unique way

Re: HOW TO FILTER ONE COIL ONLY F/HUMBCKR?

I've seen this diagram somewhere but can't find it now. If I remeber correctly you connect your tone pot to the split wire of you pickup. I mean not to hte wire that goes to the volume pot and not to the wire that goes straight to ground but the other two (or one). However this will only work to the coil that connects to the ground. If you want to do it for the other coil you would have to reverse the hot and ground wire on your pickup.

Re: HOW TO FILTER ONE COIL ONLY F/HUMBCKR?

This is what I was trying to get clarified. It is certainly possible to run one coil through a tone pot and have both coils in series (only one coil of a series humbucker is controlled by a tone pot). But as Zhaggy said, this will only work on the coil connected to ground.

For example (with a Duncan pup): green goes to ground, red and white connected and to the input lug on a tone pot, black to vol pot or switch.

Re: HOW TO FILTER ONE COIL ONLY F/HUMBCKR?

Thanks you all, I've what I was looking for on the Internet, it took me a
long time because their is not very much on this, and it is a nice feature
if you have only one pickup , here it is...

it called half series,

Coils are all in series, between the 2 coils you put your cap and direct to
ground. Also could put a pot there to control the amount of hy freq. attenuation.

Thanks

Re: HOW TO FILTER ONE COIL ONLY F/HUMBCKR?

Try out the following diagram with a cheap 2pole 5 way rotary switch from Radio Shack and 4 caps
1HVaritonemod.jpg

This will give you:
1 normal series bucker tone
2-South coil slightly darker
3-South coil darker yet.
4-South coil brighter.
5-Whole bucker slightly darker but maintaining itś bite.
