How to find the perfect amp?

Re: How to find the perfect amp?

I have said it before and I will say it again...Bruce Collins is a tube guitar amp genius and Lew is right...he does have great ears!

I have an amp that brice built for me and it is amazing and I also sent Bruce my old tired Twin Reverb...he breather new life into it! I bet it didn't sound this good the day it was built!

Re: How to find the perfect amp?

In my quest for tone it seems that I've played just about every amp out there, including most of them on your list. I've owned enough amps, my most recent being an H&K Triamp, but I keep coming back to my Marshall 25th Anniversary. It seems every time I get a new rig, I keep comparing it to the Marshall and I can't help but notice all the things I don't like. Hopefully this time I'll stick with it and maybe add another amp for clean.

Truth is, you have to go through amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp after amp.....and actually own them for a while until you find one you want to hold onto to and not resell.

You can't find the perfect amp by thinking about it or theorizing about it.

You gotta try it, buy it if you think you love it, own it for a while, keep it or sell it and get another one, until you find the one you want to keep.

That's just the way it goes.

Lew

Lew you got a way of saying things that crack me up,and yet you are correct.

Re: How to find the perfect amp?

It is my misfortune, that my favourite amp.. does not suit the style I play most of the time. I play metal.. alot, with bands, jamming etc as a rhythm guitarist (the ONLY reasin I got a C5 rather than a 59).

However, on my own im more of a classic rock / blues guy (and fortunately I've finally found someone to start a musical project in that vein, he likes stoner rock, and shoegaze style with loads of pedals.. should be interesting).

My favourite amp, ever (that I have managed to play) is the Vox AC30cc. (Speaking of which.. anyone have any issues with it? I hear the old AC30s had some serious reliability issues). It just has that tone to me that screams.. clean, but can also be nice and rock sounding (the most I need when playing on my own).

My second favourite that I've managed to play is the Marshall JCM 2000, which, had far too much gain for me still, and the EQ was completely unfunctional (may as well have been an on off switch).
Im guessing a JCM 800 is more in my Veins.. but.. er.. looouuuuuud.
