How to fit a SD into a Ibanez RG

My friend has this Ibanez RGA321 with DiMarios and is considering putting Duncans but......The guitar uses direct mounted pickups with a triangle shaped plate for the screw. Duncans won't fit into the channel because the plate is rectangle shaped.

Does Duncan offer the DiMarzio type plate?? I've never seen one before so I guess the answer is no. So how do you guys with Ibanez guitars put in Duncans?

Hi Donuts . I remmber this being discused before " the Ibanez Traingular mounting Routs." make a search on the forum and you will find some ans. But Iguess the best thing to do would be to take it to good reapr man to get it routed out properly.

Is this what youare referring to?

The only solution I could see would be to trim the baseplate of the SD to fit, or, if you felt a bit more adventurous, swap the baseplate of the installed pickups for the Seymour Duncan ones. The second of these would be my solution. Of course, any mod like this would stuff your Seymour Duncan warranty.

If you were skilled with a router, you could recess the body below the front to accomodate the square bracket without affecting the outer profile.

Re: How to fit a SD into a Ibanez RG

Thats why I said take the guitar to a skilled guitar tech to get it routed.

Re: How to fit a SD into a Ibanez RG

Nor am I . :) By the way I like that Ibanez in the Pic. nice finish

Re: How to fit a SD into a Ibanez RG

As suggested, either go to a tech and have the guitar routed, or simply File /Dremel /clip the tabs to shape /Swap baseplates if possible. THis is also what I´d recommend, as it doesn´t modify the guitar....

Re: How to fit a SD into a Ibanez RG

baseplate swaps are a cinch. The screws have lined up for me thus far. I put a USA Jackson J-90c on a dimarzio baseplate. It was a seamless transition.

IT MUST BE SLIGHTLY ROUTED LIKE THIS AXE

I wouldn't route the body. I would file the base plates.

you can go either way but if you want to ever sell the duncans they will not be as appealing filed:smokin:
also if he wants to try rio's or gibson,or any other pup they will also have to be filed:smack:
it is much more feasable to make the guitar be adaptable to all the pups out there rather than file every pup he tries:smokin:

I think you are correct if he is swapping pups all the time. The one you put on the picture came out nice.

Re: How to fit a SD into a Ibanez RG

Are you guys crazy?! It would be a waste to route a guitar just to fit in a pair of humbuckers that may come out again one day!
The triangle shaped route looks 'right' for that type of guitar IMHO.
Though the idea of routing onder the top sounds good it might still be a hassle to get the pickup in.

I would just file the legs of the pickups baseplate to shape. Easy mod you can do yourself and you won't have to worry about ruining the guitar.

Re: How to fit a SD into a Ibanez RG

File the pickup tabs. I clipped them to fit a guitar that had that route. It was no bid deal. And as far as the pickups being less desirable, two things: first, that's less of a hit in resale value than a guitar that has been routed; second, if the pickups will be used with mounting rings, you'll never see that the tabs were trimmed in the first place.

Re: How to fit a SD into a Ibanez RG

thanks guys...it's the same guitar as Oc Doc posted. I guess filing the plate is the best option but it seems quite a job for hand tool, the metal isn't thin!

Re: How to fit a SD into a Ibanez RG

please do NOT gouge out any wood from your Ibanez RGA, instead, file the tips of the angular mounting flap of the Duncan pickup to match the Ibanez's cavity outline. then on, installation would be a breeze. i did it with mine:

Hmm... which is worth more and loses more value when modified... An Ibanez Prestige or a Duncan pickup.....

Which mod is easier to do: by far the baseplates.

If he doesn´t plan this guitar as a pickup testbed but actually want´s to keep the pickups he puts in (what a Novel idea!), he would be causing extra cost , extra work, and devaluation of his guitar, for ZERO benefit...

Re: How to fit a SD into a Ibanez RG

+1, why the hell knock all that value off the rga to not devalue a duncan by like $10/$15 dollars?

i have the rga121 with demon/full shred, i just filed the baseplates down a touch.. it doesn't need much!
