How to get recordings onto a CD?

Bear with me here, gang. Been doing a lot of home recording onto my Tascam DP-01 and am trying to make sense of how to get my recordings onto a CD.

Okay, I admit that I'm having a hard time with the manual. The manual reads like it was written by the people who designed the machine, but who never anticipated the questions that would arise from people like me who need a more down to earth explaination of the procedures outlined and of the terms used and what they mean. For me it's very complicated and it would take way to long to type it all out, so I wont.

To make a long series of questions very short, is there a quick, easy way to get the recordings from my DP-01 onto a CD? Right now the only copies I can make are onto cassette tapes...but it's so friggin' easy! Connect the "outs" from my recording into the "ins" of the cassette recorder, set the level and boom, ya got a copy!

Can a CD be burned that easy?

your recording rig should have a USB or FIREWIRE out to go to a pc, then you just transfer the files.

Re: How to get recordings onto a CD?

i just looked up the tascam DP-1 man, it has USB AND a CD RW drive. lol did you somehow overlook this?

Re: How to get recordings onto a CD?

Yeah, it has the UBS port and the internal hard drive. No, what I'm talking about are all of the steps they have outlined in order for you first, get your recordings properly formatted so you can then get the songs onto a computor, so you can then burn it onto a CD.

There's a lot involved and to me it just seems like too much is involved in order to do something so simple. But then, maybe that's just the way it is and I'm going to HAVE to find someone who can help me to understand it all better.

with my lil' fostex, I had to go to the downloads section of their site and find an application that enables communication between the unit and the computer. perhaps tascam has a similar program you need to install. it's a pretty simple program, but of course, it has it's own PDF of instructions I had to read through first.

ok ... aside from the obvious (RTFM), i'd say you could do this ..
connect the stereo audio output from your tascam's output to your computer's stereo line-in input .. then select 'line in' as the source for your computer's recording program ... hit 'record' on the computer, then 'play' on the tascam .. should get it into your computer ... then you can burn a CD as you normally would

hope this helps even if it is way substandard in quality as compared to what you can get by doing it right

another way might just be to hook up the USB cable between the tascam and your computer, then go to 'my computer' and see if your computer is recognizing the hard drive on the tascam .. if it is, you can open it and drag and drop the files (i am assuming you have figured out a way to record a mixed-down master of your tunes) from the tascam to the computer

Re: How to get recordings onto a CD?

Thanks for the tips so far. I went to another forum and one fellow in particular has offered to help me out as I need it, which won't be for about another week or two. But I'm trying to do the needed homework first before I start pressing buttons, only to find out I messed something up.

After I've recorded something the next step is to get a final stereo mix and then to create a master file. I haven't done this yet but the steps sound pretty easy. But the real confusion starts after all of this. Before you can load songs onto a computor the manual speaks of: Selecting an active partition...formatting the disk...formatting a partition and formatting the FAT partition. But all along they give you various warnings, such as in 'formatting a disk'...."this destroys all data on the whole disk. Only carry this operation out if you are sure." Or in 'formatting the FAT partition'..."you cannot undo this operation-all data on the FAT partition is lost".

Other things such as in formatting the disk, they show you how to select the size of the partition (32,16, 8 or 4 gigabytes) but that raises the question of how do I know what size to select? Mind you, all of these steps are shown BEFORE you even connect the recorder up to a computor! Then the fun starts all over again.

formatting your computer? that makes no sense. seriously just check the tascam website and download any drivers they provide for your operating system. then just plug your tascam into the USB, drag the files onto your computer, and youre practically done.

Re: How to get recordings onto a CD?

turn to page 45 in the users manual. It takes 6 simple steps to get a master mix to your pc, and then you can burn to CD as your heart desires. If you want to export a track that has not been mastered, follow the directions on page 43 "exporting a track"
Your computer will see the tascam as a removable drive.

Manual is here

Re: How to get recordings onto a CD?

are you talking about needing to format the HD on the tascam? or the HD on your computer? .. you DO NOT want to reformat the HD on your computer .. it would be kinda lame, but potentially understandable, i guess, if you had to format the HD on the tascam before using it ... seems to me that they should have formatted it at the factory and it should be like me and rashayritto described it - drag and drop

good luck
