How to get "That guy's tone" funny thing...

Aceman

I am your doctor of love!
Is it just me, or does it seem odd that guys are all out trying to buy this/that latest pickup to get "That guy's tone" when the tone you know wasn't made using those pickups?

- No offense Seymour

Slash, for example. He used the basic A2P. His new "Slash" model is some little tweek of whatever for his latest guitars. I don't know that I have even heard the new Slash model A2P's on anything.

DiMartini, same deal. everything about him that I know/love was a JB. Anyone heard anything from him actually using the DiMartini model?

Lynch, yet again. His original tone was a Distortion. I don't think he used a Demon until Lynch mobs second platter. I could be wrong there.

I'm not saying these are bad pups at all. Demon is obviously well loved. Just asking the question...

It seems to me these guys are getting their 'sig' on for their personally playing and we haven't even really heard them use these things yet.

Re: How to get "That guy's tone" funny thing...

The A2P Slash is basically the same formula, wound to make a "Standard" Les Paul sound like HIS orignal Les Paul... to a certain extent. Plus, it's a good way for Slash to make a few extra bucks, I suppose... like he needs it.

Same with the EVH Frankenstein. I still don't believe the "last" pickup in that guitar was 14K and since it was "dead" and read "0" it's likely the pickup was VOICED to sound similar to what was in there and match the output of this modern guitars so he can change guitar during a show and the output is consistent.. remember the ad says, "Modern Take on the classic pickup". Just my naive view on that.

Sig pickups are just products that artists get a cut of for having their name on them and satisfy the fanbase who wants to "sound like" their hero, if that's even possible. I'm sure that the Slash A2P in the neck and an EVH Frankie in the bridge might make an outstanding combo in various guitars, but if I bought them, it would be on the merit of the pickup itself and not who's name is on it.

And frankly, if you really want to to "sound like" X Rockstar... hire him for a session. ;)

Yup. :smoker:

Re: How to get "That guy's tone" funny thing...

slash sounded better on heroin. VR is crap. It's right there with new gn'r on the suck-o-meter.

his pickups...(sadly I'm friends with someone who put these in a paul) do not sound alnico 2. Not warm enough. But whatever. Flame me. I don't give a rat's @$$. Slash will forever be synonymous with guitar hero and will forever be looked at as "guns n roses" FIRST lead guitarist.

pfft. It's like giving CC Deville a pro sig humbucker. I'll be damned before that happens. I hope slash and CC Deville read this.

How to get Jimmy Page's tone: Buy a $10,000 guitar, guzzle a litre of whiskey, turn the treble on the amp and tone knobs all the way down, get your fingers stuck in the strings while playing random notes up and down the fretboard. There, I've said it.

:)

finally someone grew a pair.

page... Ugh... Opium. That's all I can say without being an utter dream killer for all the JP fanatics. He recorder track over track over track to get his sound! Layer any guitar as much as he did and you will get that same "big guitar sound" that he is famous for. I love his work, but tonally I am less than impressed.

OH how much i agree with this! I know IF evh and others are telling the truth about this ONE pu that reads zero in that guitar it is not going to have the output and full tone that the frankenstein pu being sold to the public has.
The pup in HIS actual guitar that reads zero probably sounds like ****, and they would not have sold many at all!

I really only liked the tone he got on Physical Graffiti and I think he was using a Super Distortion then. It's the sloppy solos that turn me off. Heck he could barely hack through "Whole Lotta Love" on that movie with Edge and Jack White. I love Zeppelin but I just don't "get" Page's playing sometimes.

FWIW, I happen to like EVH's newer tones on Balance and III, where he used three 5150's all dialed different and were mixed based on the tune. I like treble and bite and clarity in guitar tone... something Page never really had. Whatevs....

when my friends and I watched that, it was noticeabley sloppy playing
and how totally sloppy awesome Jack's playing was
I guess we expected more from an Idol like page

Edge was technically perfect as expected

Jack's playing is rough in a good way and nobody expects him to be amazing.. he's a very visceral player. I especially liked his makeshift "board guitar" he made out of a plank of wood, a couple nails a paino string and a old Tele pickup.

I hate to talk smack on Page, especially since Bonham was one of my biggest drum influences growing up, but it was always the rhythm section of Zeppelin I got into... Page and Plant... eh. Those two were damn lucky to have Bonham and Jones keeping it together.

Anyway... yeah... signature pickups. Anybody have a favorite signature pup?

Re: How to get "That guy's tone" funny thing...

I love JP and he will always be remembered for some of the things he did on a guitar but some of these comments are EXTREMELY FUNNY! :lmao::lmao::lmao:

Re: How to get "That guy's tone" funny thing...

You need to learn how to play like someone before you can sound like someone. A strat doesn't make someone sound like Clapton, Beck or SRV.

A musicians choice of gear is fairly esoteric, but it's the most tangible and readily imitated aspect of someones playing. Gear is a mater of acquisition, while skills are a mater of practice and talent.

Re: How to get "That guy's tone" funny thing...

Yeah, but the new album/sound is never as good as the last... Therefore the public will scramble for frankenstrats. Wolfgangs look like much better guitars anyway... lol

Re: How to get "That guy's tone" funny thing...

That guitar was a POS anyway. His new ones sound way better.

yes it was he even called it that many times!:laugh2:
my favorite was the first B/W charvel before he turned it into a mess, but then again i am very biased about charvels. i own 5 guitars and 4 are charvels
