EMG 85

EMG81, a Steinberger with a TransTrem, & a whole lotta gain.

I heard somewhere that he used his white strat with a JB (from the "Wait" video), into a tubescreamer into one of Leslie Wests' old marshalls.

Maybe on the second album. That was Steinberger with EMGS into a ADA-pre then power amp then Marshall cab. He was also using BBE at the time and said it was so vital to his sound he'd talked to ADA about offering them as a combo.

For that first album, I heard he used a Fender (not ESP) strat with a 59 at the bridge into a Marshall plexi dimed...I'm not a Vito authority but this is what I remember reading.

He IS a killer guitarist... :)

Here's a clip of VHaholic playing his '59 loaded Strat.

Turn up the volume.....and "Wait".....(har har)

VHaholic plays "Wait"

:saeek:

As you can hear, you need neither EMGs, nor high-gain, although both are fine either way.

The key for Vito's tone is *CLARITY*, and *TRANSPARENCY*.

EMGs are great, especially an 85 (NOT an 81) because they are so transparent, in spite of their medium/high output.

Re: How to get Vito Bratta wait album sound????????

I had a "Guitar for the Practicing Musician" mag ages ago in which Bratta detailed his setup for the Pride album. It was stupidly simple. Alder Strat with a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge and a Dimarzio HS-3 in the neck, Tubescreamer, Marshall Plexi. That's it.

Re: How to get Vito Bratta wait album sound????????

... so many conflicting reports on Vito's gear... understandable since it's been over two decades since White Lion rocked the Earth... :D 1st album -> *ESP* <- ASH bodied Strat w/ JB... Marshall, JC-120. 2nd... Steinberger GM2TA w/ EMG 85s & ADA MP-1 version 1 reportedly used later by Nuno for Pornograffiti. Mike Wagener Producing.

Damn, this thread is old.

ADA MP-1 version 1 reportedly used later by Nuno for Pornograffiti. Mike Wagener Producing.
I believe Skid Row used the same one as well for their first album.

Michael has said repeatedly that he plugged most everyone on all those '80s hair records (White Lion, Extreme, Skid Row etc) into the exact same rig with the exact same ADA MP1 running version 1.xx.

Here's the settings;

Overdrive 1 : 4.0 dist
Overdrive 2 : 5.5 dist
Master Gain : 7.5 dist
Bass : 12
Mid : 6
Treb : 6
Pres : 12
Voicing : .tube
FX loop : off

From the ADA it went into the McIntosh 2100 (transistor) poweramp and from there into a vintage Marshall 4x12 cab with the original G12H inside. At that time I normally used Fostex M11RP ribbon mics and Countryman Lavalier mics through a John Hardy M1 to record guitar.

I had a "Guitar for the Practicing Musician" mag ages ago too where he was talking about how he walked into a shop and bought a Fender strat without even plugging it in. From that point it got EMGs and a Floyd put in.

That was one of my favorite sections of the GFPM, where they interviewed a dude who told them about some favorite (and usually obscure and/or cheap and/or generic) of gear.

Re: How to get Vito Bratta wait album sound????????

Here's the article from May 1988. Dug out the crusty old mag from storage haha. NOWHERE could I find a definitive answer on Vito's setup for Pride. Even Michael Wagener's description is different than this. Enjoy!

Re: How to get Vito Bratta wait album sound????????

In that article above he says JB bridge and HS-3 neck. Pretty definitive for that time period I would say.

That's what he used at the time of the interview. For Pride he said he used a stratocaster with an old Duncan humbucker.
I read somewhere it was a 59.

Seems like he hadn't locked in with the ADA yet at this point but did with the ESP and the JB so I would say one could get pretty close with that combo of JB/Tubescreamer/Plexi. And yes this thread is old haha. I've searched periodically over the years for the formula for the Pride album tone. Lots of speculation and stories so I thought I'd put it to bed with this article. Tried my strat into my tubescreamer into my plexi....yep that's it. So simple and so clear with lots of sustain and big clear chords. Need to add the JB into the mix now.

That's what he used on "Big Game" and the following tour. If you compare the tone to "Pride" (the 2nd album where "Wait" came from) it is less punchy and middy but clearer and lighter overall. On the successor album "Mane Attraction" and the following tour he returned to the strat.

Yes, I have seen them twice, and what a killer guitar player Vito was (probably still is?). I much preferred the show on the Mane Attraction tour as they abandoned all that circus-like stuff on the Big Game tour and got back to the basics of rock 'n' roll.
