How to ID a magnet

Re: How to ID a magnet

Probably not but check into a Iphone app . but if you are trying to decipher the difference between Alnico & ceramic magnets . Alnico is a conductor /ceramic is not so the continuity test with any multimeter will determine this .

Re: How to ID a magnet

alnico looks different than ceramic but telling alnico 4 from alnico 5 for example is pretty hard

Re: How to ID a magnet

between $35 and $10000 depending on what you need it for :D i just have a simple rb annis unit

I got hold of some cheapie thing via eBay, which works fine, but was no help whatsoever for this kind of thing, so a bit moot. Grr.

Also, isn't there possibility that the results can cross over between grades, so that you draw an incorrect conclusion if the OP's magnet has become degaussed? Or is that kind of thing less drastic than I've imagined?

Re: How to ID a magnet

absolutely. i have alnico 2, 3, 4, and 5 that all read around the same. a degaussed a5 could be weaker than a fully charged a2

Re: How to ID a magnet

You can tell many of them apart with a pickup, an inductance meter, and known magnets of the various types. Each alnico type has a different effect on the inductance of the pickup; by taking readings at two different frequencies the differences become fairly apparent. A2 & A4 read very similar, so they are hard to tell apart without a listening test, but they measure quite different from A3 & especially A5.
