HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

If I want the end result to have a four conductor wire, should I order the 59 with 4 or 2 (the custom 5 come with a 4 con. standard)?

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

What pots are recommended if I use one of these (custom 5 screws, 59 poles) in the bridge position along with strat type pickups, guitar is ash with maple neck and rosewood board

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

depends on what you want. generally 500k is brighter, and 250k is warmer. do a search, there are tons of info on the matter.

On the other hand, there's no posting in The Vault. Maybe we should keep this open so folks can continue to contribute.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

True. This is the reason why I joined the forum. I wanted to know more about the hybrids.

Then again they can just post a new thread asking about it. It's really up to you guys.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

It's closer in tonality to strat single coils than your typical humbucker, and with a 7.2k coil and a low-4k coil, you can choose what kind of in-between sound you want. 7.2k would be like a vintage wound strat compensated bridge pickup, mid-4k would be good for quack in position 2, but not really great by itself.

So to answer you question: It agrees with singles coils better than any humbucker you'll find out there with the exception of the p-rails.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

tried the C5/59 bridge and 59/jazz nickel-covered hybrid pair in crusty philtrum's LP; IMHO they live up to all the hype. i really want to make some with A2s now...

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

i dont know much about legals but is seems like instead of saleing the pups for profit you should sale the service for profit

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

So are there an recommendations for how this pick-up should be used? I've heard about someone using the alnico 5 hybrid in a alder body, maple neck rosewood fingerboard strat with a 250k volume pot and no tone on the bridge. With what wood combinations and in particular what wiring (pot values etc) is the hybrid recommended by others?

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Hi all... just dropped in after a long absence... glad to hear some tone questers are discovering the world of Hybrid Duncans...
59/Custom A2 Bridge and 59/Jazz A5 or 2 Neck are still my faves... starting to really appreciate the JB/Custom A5 as well.... has a cool vibe with the Customs ceramic magnet as well.

kgarvey... I usually install a 500k or 1meg Spin-A-Split on the Bridge pickup which adds an minimal additional load to the pickup... slight taming of the resonant peaks.

I generally use a "no-load" Spin-A-Split on the neck pickup.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

BachToRock, have you tried (or considered) making a hybrid out of an A2Pn and a PG1n? my understanding is that they're very similar, with the PG's slightly higher res. peak giving it a slight honk in the treble... in your experience, would you still get the benefits of a more mis-matched hybrid from this setup with the 2 coils involved being so similar to begin with? this is Re a set for an LP, i'm tossing up between another JB/CC in the bridge and a neck hybrid or just going stock with a C5/PGn set.
...it's my first post, please be gentle

am moving house, and will then make a JB/DDn hybrid which will rule the earth with an iron fist.

BTR - any thoughts on the above? the top was my first post and everybody ignored it.
