HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

I just stole a "EVH/'78" set on ebay! Assuming these are legit, I'm going to do something that might be considered as Seymour Duncan blasphemy.

'78/Custom Hybrid :cool2:

If you do , plz take some detailed pics of the guts of both. Lets see the magnets, coils, wiring, etc... in detail.

Eddie Rules !!![not Maiden!!!]but he's pretty cool too!!!

ThX!!!

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

I tried half-airing my 498t in my Gibson Les Paul Custom and it has that unbalanced coil thing happening. One coil has less magnetic pull reducing the output and changing the tone. Although the coils are the same it gets in the ballpark.

Is this kinda the same as doing a hybrid?

Thx!

no, that's a half-air mod. a hybrid is taking two pickups, swapping a coil from each one, and putting them back together.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Is anyone going to post some sound clips? ? ? A straight humbucker then the hybrid to hear the difference? I am sure I am not the only 1 who would appreciate it.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

I was thinking about replacing one of the coils on a humbucker with a strat single coil...but then I saw that Orpheo had, in essence, done that already. However, I do VERY much want to know what it ended up sounding like. So Orpheo? How did that crazy Stag Mag hybrid of yours sound?

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

This is a great thread, I have a Duncan Custom and it has the ceramic magnet and I like the punchyness of the output but the to me the ceramic has high end harshness to it. Would I be better off putting in a A3 or A4 mag or getting a 59 and making a hybrid to get a warmer tone with less of the compressed sound? Thanks for any input.

There's 2 things you can try: turn the High on your EQ down a bit, or get an EQ pedal and pull the 6K-16KHz sliders down.

Why, what could possibly have changed? You still do it today the way you did it 3 months ago.

Or are you looking for something a bit more specific which you should probably have mentioned up front, like looking to buy one?

well, BachToRock was making them and he hasn't replied to a PM about buying one or chimed in here, so that has definitely changed. i thought it would be implied, but yes i would like to buy one. and i was hoping to get it from someone with experience making them.

just figured i'd ask and see who replied.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

My apologies... travelling for work all the time... If able to help out I most certainly will!

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

I can't even remember if I posted in this thread or not, but can say the A5 C5/59 hybrid has been in my Fender alder/rosewood HS strat, along with a Hot Rails for years, and the hybrid pickup may be the best strat humbucker I've tried. It's a keeper. Just an absolutely great pickup....the bridge between the 59 and C5.

The C5/59 is 10.76K and the Hot Rails is 10.24K, but they're only hooked up to a 250K volume and 3 way....no tone control. It sounds like an HH guitar, and the tone in both positions is great.

I really should put together about 2 more, and put them in a LP and PRS.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

a question for the powers that be:

as long as we're making them from our own parts, and not buying them from a manufacturer, what's the deal on double-cream?

am planning on making a double-cream JB8, and i want to know if i can trade or sell it (if i don't want to keep it in) without generating heat for SD.

i understand that trademarks are serious business

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

In theory, SD should be ok. I mean, it's not their fault that people are using their zebras to make double creams. As long as they don't leave the factory as a double cream, they aren't stepping on the stupid trademark.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Bleh. Maybe THIS would end my silly quest for a hot neck PAF type pickup... or maybe a Screamin' Demon/'59n hybrid? Anyone tried that? That would be about 5K on one coil & 3.7 on the other, and I already have both of those.

Bachtorock, I am still confused as to what the 4 conductor wires get soldered to. The black and white of each coil get soldered to opposite colors of each other but what about the 4 conductor wire?

i definitely gotta try that someday!!!
