HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

a question for the powers that be:

as long as we're making them from our own parts, and not buying them from a manufacturer, what's the deal on double-cream?

am planning on making a double-cream JB8, and i want to know if i can trade or sell it (if i don't want to keep it in) without generating heat for SD.

i understand that trademarks are serious business

Eh, I wouldn't worry about that. If it's not advertised on the SD website as a product, there's nothing the competition can do. I mean, I'll bet SD custom shop would make a hybrid (the the less brave/electronically inclined of us) for a price if we provided our own coils. They are basically doing contract work and not producing a new product. It's the same reason Gibson can't sue Ed Roman for re-topping a Les Paul and reselling it.... so long as it's not passed off as a new product and priced as new.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Hi, please I need help.
I wanted to try an hybrid too so I bought second hand a sh1 and a sh11
The problem is the '59 guy told me it was a bridge model but he sent me a SH1 Neck...
Is there any chance to use it anyway to build a bridge model?
First things that come in to my mind the difference in impedance is negligible BUT the screw and stud bobbins are swapped (and I wanted a normal look pickup), I think it's impossible to invert them anyway unless someone can tell what is the turning sense, because they are wound different, right?
Any help is appreciate,
thank you

Double-cream is not an issue for private parties selling single pickups. Most low-volume pickup makers do double-cream, too and DiMarzio seems to have the courtesy to just screw over the bunch of us who buy from larger manufacturers.

On the other hand, if you'd be so kind to pick the legal battle and bring DiMarzio to their knees that would be much appreciated.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Hi all...I just finished making 2, 59/Custom Hybrids with RC Al II mags....WOW!! You guys were right...I put one in the bridge of my Schecter Solo 6 custom [great guitar BTW];;;;;and what a tone....It replaced a Wolfetone Marshallhead 9.2k Al II, which was to middy....The Hybrid is big sounding, but balanced..nice highs, balanced mids and tight lows but still feels vintagey...When I first put it in it sounded sort of single coil like, but the screws were up some because the pickup had a cover on it before...I backed down the screws to be more flush with the pickup, and there was the tone I was looking for...I did have to back the gain down a notch or 2 on my MTS Egnater/Randall modular amp...but the guitar just screams for solos. It also is so much more 3D sounding..Also, this one had the Custom screw coil in it so when it's split it sounds really cool.......I also changed out the magnet of the Alnico II neck pickup to an Al III.....perfect...cleaned it up a bit...sounds just great..I've tried many of Dimarzio mismatched coil humbuckers and they all sounded rather flat and dull compared to the Hybrid 59/Custom..The other Hybrid is going in my 75 Burny LP Custom w/rosewood board...a guitar that sounds better than many Gibson's I;ve owned....I want to thank all of you for this great information that you've been willing to share...It's greatly appreciated!! Rod

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

A question for you guys that use the Hybrid...Do you think that it has a lot of treble?..
I've been using mine and I have to set my amps up very differently because of the added treble...I'm used to PAF's...and it still has a fair amount of high end...Has this been others experiences as well??

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Whatcha gonna do with that wolfetone?

Hi...If you want the Marshallhead, I'd sell it for $100 and include alnico II and 5 magnets....The pickup is double creme...They look new...I also have the matching neck pickup for the same price as well

In mine (59n/CC with A2 mag) I hear a upper mid enphasis, not disturbing at all, I don't know if it's what you're talking about.

My only complain is about the noise, a bit higher than expected, but I can survive with it since the pickup is great in my strat.

Hi Marcello, Yea, I guess it is the upper mids...I does sound good though

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Well, I was just wondering to myself about how to get the upper-mid bite of a JB and get the chunk of a Custom. Hmm. This might work. =) Now, what kind of magnet do I use?

This sounds like the pickup that might work for you....I use Alnico II Rough casts in my Hybrids...

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

I only have experience with A5 and ceramics. I like the A5 better in my JB, but couldnt stand it in the Custom, where I liked the ceramic mag, but thought the high end was too grating.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

What can I expect if I do a Screamin' Demon/Custom hybrid? I know a DMZ Evo neck has a 7K coil and a 5K coil, and what I would be going for is a similar sound. Does anyone know if the Evo uses the same wire gauge (43?) for both coils or are they different gauges?

And what of this talk that a hybrid is harder to do pinch harmonics on and doesn't compress or sound good for metal? This wasn't really my experience with the 490/Demon hybrid at all.

^ it'll be relatively noisy; the demon and custom both use (the same type of?) 43AWG, the custom just has a heap more wire on it.
that's not to say it won't sound ok, though.

i can vouch for the excellence and versatility of the custom/JB type hybrids, as well

I decided to try swapping the mag from A2 to an UOA5, trying to get a tighter bass, since my strat is bright but not as much as other I have, I'll let you know
