There really isn't a good way to do it. If it isn't plated, you could try sanding it but it'll be difficult to reach some of the recesses. If it is plated, trying to remove the shiny finish will leave it looking horrible and render it just about worthless.

Sand blasting maybe? Might have to disassemble it first.
