How To: Make A Pickguard

Can anyone here tell me how to make a decent amateur pickguard? Is there a way? I am getting a new guitar and I absolutely hate the color of the pickguard so I am looking to make one for it. Any ideas.

Or do you know of any shops around that will make you a custom pickguard at a price short of rape?

Rustoleum Plastic Primer over the old one, then paint it and clearcoat it with the color you'd want.

What if it's not just the color? What if you need a different shape, too?

As I read it, he had a problem with the existing pickguard's color. ;)

That's what he said in the original post, but he just added that he wants a different shape, too. Besides, the title of the thread is "How To: Make a Pickguard", not "How To: Paint a Pickguard". See, I'm selfishly trying to see to it that my own questions pertaining to this topic are answered, as well.

Re: How To: Make A Pickguard

Making my own pickguard was the worst thing I ever decided to do. I got a blank one and carved it out with a small saw, some files, a drill and some sandpaper. I even used a soldering iron to melt some parts of it into the right shape. It didn't look pretty but it did the job.

I think Fuse just got one custom made and if I remember correctly the price wasn't too extortionate either. Shoot him a PM or something, he should be able to fill you in.

EDIT: Here's the thread he mentions it in: https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?t=191428

I am not sure about the guitar you have but you can also get custom pick guard built warmoth guitars. I ordered one for my telecaster and they certainly do a great job.

Do Warmoth make custom pickguard shapes?? If they do I doubt it's cheap...

Cruise over to Stewmac's website. I'm pretty sure they'd have the tools and materials necessary to make your own pickguards. They probably even have books, tutorials, etc...

If you own a router and hand tools it's a bit time consuming but pretty easy.
Draw out your shape on a piece of MDF and cut it the way you want it.
It has to be as exact as possible as this is your template.
Get a suitable piece of plastic and a router with a 45 degree bit and trace your template.

The hardest part will be getting the template to match your existing screw holes and pickup routes.
I usually use something like Adobe Illustrator to make a 1:1 drawing so I can accurately place the screw holes, etc.

All that said, unless you want to learn this as a skill or for the experience, just pay someone to do it.

It'll seem like a lot of money, but it's pretty labor intensive, especially for a custom pickguard.

Edit: if you can make it digitally, you might be able to find someone with a CNC machine who can import the file and cut it for cheaper.

Good luck.
