I have a question it may sound dumb but I never mic'd an amp before but Im doing a amp demo for Kustom on a hybrid amp they have. And Im not sure how to mic it and what equipment I need. I know I need the mic a stand where do you plug the mic though??lol into the amp with the guitar with adaptor or do I need a seperate speaker of some kind? Please let me know thanks.

Re: How to mic an amp???And what equipment you need?

are you doing this for a recording? if so you need a mic, stand, cable, and recorder
are you doing this for a live show? if so you need a mic, stand, cable, and pa

plugging the mic into the amp you are mic'ing wont do you any good. it wont be any louder than what the amp can already do and will feedback horribly all the time.

kustom the amp company wants you to make a recording for them?

Re: How to mic an amp???And what equipment you need?

Yes I said I would because there is no youtube vids on this amp that is new from 2014 the PH TUBE 12. And they want a copy of the video to use. So Im just doing a youtube vid on the amp and its features,tone,etc... So not for live I guess for recording

Re: How to mic an amp???And what equipment you need?

Shure sm57 or sennheiser 609
for mics

The 57 will need either a short Mic stand or a boom
The 609 will drape over the top of the amp and dangle in front

It's designed for this

Then your recorder

Re: How to mic an amp???And what equipment you need?

So the sound of the amp will come through the recorder??? Or maybe no Im doing a live video on youtube so it would have to come out of a pa speaker then correct??? So mic/cable/stand(boom),and a external speaker that the mic will plug into correct for a live youtube vid??

Re: How to mic an amp???And what equipment you need?

Do you have an audio interface that hooks to your computer? Also, when you say live, do you mean in realtime, or a recording of a live performance, that can be uploaded at a later time?

no realtime and no I dont have an audio interface I just wanted to do a simple mic'd amp realtime demo of a amp for youtube for Kustom amp company to display this amp that there is no vids on the net for.And its a great sounding hybrid amp. So I would need a mic/cable/stand and then a PA speaker or something to plug the mic into to capture the amps sound correct??

1. You can use the camera mic, but you have to play at a low level or the mic will start to clip (cut out and distort = very bad)

2. You can record to a computer.

You will need:

A mic (as listed above)
A USB interface - Example
A Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) which is just software that lets you record, edit and save the audio. Example

Optional: Monitor speakers or headphones to better hear what you recording sounds like

So when you see these vids on a person doing an amp demo and are playing in realtime they arent just using a mic in fromt of the amp and then plugging that mic into another external speaker to capture the amps sound not really recording just beefing the amps sound for the demo. I just never did this stuff I just play so I need to learn. So then I could do mic-into interface-then into a monitor speaker??

They can be done in different ways; Some just use the camera video/audio from their phone, camcorder, or webcam. Others record the footage with those, but record the audio seperately via a mic placed in front of the amp's speaker, which is connected to an audio interface, that is in turn connected to a computer. They then put the two together.

I did this the other day. The video was recorded by my video camera, the sound was recorded via an SM57 into my audio interface. I then put the two together in Windows Movie Maker, and muted the sound from the video camera:

I've no idea if that link works, but assuming it does - apologies to everyone about the dodgy lead part :34:

Re: How to mic an amp???And what equipment you need?

I'm a Shure SM57 man myself. From there you will need a usb interface and some kind of recording software for your computer. There is probably some kind of free recording software available now but I use Presonus Studio One.

You could go with a cheaper interface but I like one that has some kind of internal amp in it to make sure you get a nice, loud recording without having to clip the recording. I like the Scarlett 2i2 from Focusrite when recording guitar only tracks. I also prefer using headphones when doing the recording and using speakers for playback.

Re: How to mic an amp???And what equipment you need?

SM57 + 609 is the way to go with much IMO. I would mix in a large diaphragm condenser in the somewhere, but then we're going a little overboard. Check for microphone usb audio interfaces - something that has up to two mic inputs, and then the usb goes to your computer. Then you just need a DAW, and you should probably use Reaper on your PC- it's cheap, and even the pros use it.

Re: How to mic an amp???And what equipment you need?

this
PV6 USB

comes with reaper software
its a mixer and a usb interface

you can use it later for other things

Does it come with a Reaper license? Considering the cost of a Reaper license is $60 that is a heck of a deal.

Do you have this? Have you checked the recordings to see if the preamps are accurate? Record a commercial album and then listen through a set of good monitors to see if the sound coming out is the same as recorded.

Edit: Nevermind, this does not allow you to record separate tracks. This only records the stereo "mix" that is then output to the USB. Still a decent deal for the OP if the preamps are any good.

Re: How to mic an amp???And what equipment you need?

I have a PV16
I got second hand
with no box or plastic or software
I use the Cakewalk "Pro Tracks" software that came with my GNX pedal

Peavey was partnered with Cakewalk back in the mid 90s
they made bundles that combined software and mixer consoles back in the day

Re: How to mic an amp???And what equipment you need?

If you can't be bothered with a computer get something like a Zoom H4n (portable recorder) plug a mic into it and hit record then line it up with the camera video in editing. The PA thing is for loud situations where the amp isn't loud enough like with a full band at a huge venue not for recording. Look up on youtube some basic recording guitar tutorials. If it is a one off thing and your camera has a line in and the amp has a line out with speaker emulation you might be able to use that or just the camera mic int he room.

Re: How to mic an amp???And what equipment you need?

after several recording experiences, I came to the conclusion that you get a better overall sound when you use at least 2 different microphones. The classic SM57 and some sort of condenser microphone pointing at different places of the speaker. If you want to go professional, I recommend the DI out of the guitar too (or after effects if you use them) and reamping after, and the again record the 2 mics.

Re: How to mic an amp???And what equipment you need?

I may just go with a ZOOM recorder and try that with the built in mic.For what I want to do.

Re: How to mic an amp???And what equipment you need?

How is the ZOOM Q2 I think I saw in a music store for about 107.00?

It's an excellent little unit. Here's me using one .

I'd say put it about two-four feet in front of your speaker. I recommend recording in an acoustically dead room....one that has little to no reverberation. Bring in seat cushions, blankets etc and scatter them over hard reflective surfaces if you have to. That way less of the character of the room will make it on the recording.
