i have a set of dimarzios that i assume are meant to be direct mounted. they didn't come with any hardware and when i tried to swap pickup brackets and hardware from a set of SD's the screw was too small to thread. can someone point me in the right direction here?

I'd normally get this kind of stuff on a bigger order from stew-mac or guitarelectronics.com, but when ordering only one or two small items MF is nice for the free shipping with no minimum required, even though the item itself is often priced a bit higher.

If they were direct mounted before, the screw holes in the pickup legs were probably enlarged, and the kit dave recommend won't help you. You may need new baseplates, or epoxy some 3-48 nuts to the existing ones to be able to use a standard pickup ring again.

I'll admit I'm a newb on direct-mounting (never had one until the last couple years, now have two prestiges), but I didn't have to enlarge my Dimarzio or Duncan's tabs/legs to direct-mount.

Also,,,,,,could the OP be talking about the ring's holes,,,,,,,in which case the answer is that the screws are supposed to fall through freely because the springs will hold it all in place once mounted.

You could also (if it is enlarged tabs on the base-plate) just find the right screws for it's current size, and then just enlarge the holes on the plastic ring just enough for the screws to drop through, if it is indeed a plastic ring then it's easy even by hand, you could drill metal rings with a drill-press if you have access.
