How to nail this tone

basically, i just love the distortion (or is it overdrive?) in this song.. its somewhat what i want to achieve, distorted but neat, clean not marshall or metal sounding, and kinda fuzzy maybe

words are insuficient anyways, check out the record, you just need to listen to the first bit, and maybe the solo.

this sounds like a distortion pedal with the distortion set pretty high, but with lowered volume on the pedal. you can get a similar effect like this, although i think this is just some Guitar Rack or similar software magic. you can get this type of sound on just any amp.

To really cop someone's distorted sound, get yourself a pedal that puts out a similar amount of gain and an equalizer pedal. Use the equalizer pedal to tweak your tone until you're spot on.

my problem is the smooth distortion... im actually playing on a solid state marshall amp, so that may be the problem, distortion seems to be too hard, too muddy, its not clean and easy going like the one in the record.

what distortion pedal and amp would you recommend?
