How to obscure a hole on strat top?

Re: How to obscure a hole on strat top?

It's not too bad. I would worry about the broken tremolo bar first.

Re: How to obscure a hole on strat top?

That's actually how I got the hole in their in the first place. It was American trem bar versus Chinese drill bit...

Re: How to obscure a hole on strat top?

take it with you to a hobby store and see if they have any model paints that are close
That's what I'd do. A hobby store will have a big selection of small paint jars.

Possibly a Chevy dealer for car colors, but it's more money, if they even stock it.

Always take the bridge assembly off the guitar, then take the bridge plate off the trem block. Clamp the broken bar and turn it out. Unless it's cross-threaded and then......ugh

Re: How to obscure a hole on strat top?

I think if the hole bothers you, there is no way a few drops of paint are going to patch, and will still drive you crazy. My thought is the same material used for abalone dots on the neck of the guitar...or some sort of small, stainless steel shape (bird? heart? dice?). Go the easy way and find a pin-up sticker.

Re: How to obscure a hole on strat top?

I agree with mincer
But you'll know there's a hole under the sticker
And rub the hole through

I still like the ear ring idea
If you can't hide it. Celebrate it

Anything you do to cover it will make it more unsightly
And bigger

Just press a diamond in and let it sparkle

Re: How to obscure a hole on strat top?

Ok, so here's my plan of action. The hole is hard to notice as is, so I won't put to much effort in making it disappear 100%. I'll put a toothpick in, cover it so that only the toothpick is exposed with painters tape, clip it short, push it in, and finally cover it with model paint from a hobby store. If it ends up looking bad, I'll drill it out and put a diamond there. Anything wrong with this approach?

Re: How to obscure a hole on strat top?

That's more or less what I suggested, so yea it'll work. Unless you want to bedazzle it.

Re: How to obscure a hole on strat top?

I looked at yours and wasn't sure I trusted myself with "recovering" paint from the cavities. Do you have any suggestions for making sure that there isn't a ring around where I put the toothpick? I think I'd need a hole in the painters tape slightly larger than the diameter of the hole to deal with that.

Re: How to obscure a hole on strat top?

Im not sure I'm following you there... What do you mean by ring? Like scuffing from sanding??
As far as the paint, go to autozone and get some duplicolor spray paint that matches close to yours if you don't want to scrape some paint off anywhere else...
Spray it into a cap or onto a piece of newspaper and dip a paint brush into it and dab it on. Allow it to dry and if its still below the surface, keep repeating until its level. Then you can wet sand it with 1500grit and polish it to blend it, or simply leave it be.

Re: How to obscure a hole on strat top?

What I mean to say is that chances are the toothpick will no fit perfectly into the hole. There might be some gaps along the outside that could form a ring. Can this be an actual issue or do I not need to worry about it?

Re: How to obscure a hole on strat top?

When you add the superglue to seal the toothpick, gently spread the superglue to the outside edges while your at it. It may take several layers, but if you take your time it will turn out ok.

There should be some YouTube videos on this subject so you can see it for yourself.

Re: How to obscure a hole on strat top?

I seal the toothpick before I paint it, correct? Also, here's a better picure to better show the hole. It's not perfectly cinsistent in terms of depth. You can see where the drill bit hit it (luckily it broke before going all the way through), where the dril hit it, and then where the finish cracked.

Re: How to obscure a hole on strat top?

The worst bit about metallic paint is that it shows EVERY imperfection....even small ones. So even with a good repair by a pro you would still be able to see a lump with jagged edges under some lighting conditions, or where the light flashed across the area.
Be prepared for going to a craft shop and needing to buy a couple of pearl decorations even after the repair.

Re: How to obscure a hole on strat top?

I don't care if it's 100% perfect (the guitar has dings and dents elsewhere) I just don't want it to be obvious that I made a fairly amateur mistake. If I do a good enough job that you can play it for a while with out even noticing it, I'm fine. But last case scenario I will cover it with a pearl and then one on the other side.

Re: How to obscure a hole on strat top?

Or...drill a few more holes in the face of the guitar. Suddenly that one doesn't seem so bad.

Go hard with the screwdriver and maybe an axe!
