How To Properly USe Tap Delay?

Ok, my main question i what exactly is tap edlay and how to sue it effectively? For me i just stomp on my dd-6 and with the right setting use it for something. What does tap delay do? Ive heard the prase being tossed around alot and recently it sparked my curiousity.

u tap in time and (usually) the repeats are in time

Essentially you hit the tap tempo with in time with the tempo of the song, and then your delays are in time.
