How to tell a SH-4 JB from a SH-6

Hi everyone,

for the guitar I'm working on (waiting for the mahagony blank to be deleviered atm..) I've bought a used SD humbucker on ebay. The seller told me it would be a SSL-4 Quarterpound. This can't be because it's - a regular humbucker. It looks like a SH-4 or SH-6, and the DC resistance is 8.1 on the black/white coil and 7.8 on the red/green coil. (15.9 altogether)

This is closest to the listed resistance values of the SH-4 and SH-6... (16.1 and 16.4), but dow

The magnet ist some middle to dark opaque grey. Is this alnico or ceramic?

There's a sticker on the back plate with the letters "DDL".

I haven't played any SD pickups till now, so I think I can't tell it from the sound. I can only tell you if the sound ist good for me or not ;)

Alright - Can anyone tell me what pickup I have? Or give me some more hints how to tell a SH-4 from a SH-6

Thanks

Cheers, Bernhard

Hallo Bernhard!Wilkommen :D
So the Distrortion is Ceramic Magnet ,and The JB AlNiCo V.That's the only difference between the two.The Initials DDL tells that's a Duncan Distortion i assume! The L have to be the Initial of the Worker who wound it!
Anyways ,it's a great PU with Mahogany ,and it's a true ,raw ,punchy Badass PU.
Welcome again and tell us how it sounds!

Hey,

thanks for your quick answer!
Well what you tell is waht I suspected... And what I hoped ;)
It's most probably a SH-6.

It will prob take me some more weeks to finish the guitar, but i'll be back to tell you bout the sound ... can't wait to hear it.

Cheers

i would be pissed if someone sold me a pickup on ebay saying it was one model and it was another hope you left him the feedback he deserves

It depends how you as a buyer feel about the error. I bought what was described as a Jazz neck model on ebay. It arrived in a Jazz box, but the label on the pup told me it was a PGn. I was interested in trying a PG anyway, so I installed it, liked it and kept it. The seller was happy, I was happy, we both got positive feedback. :)

Whats odd here is that an SSL-4 QP is a single-coil with oversized mag pole pieces. There's no way you can mistake it for anything else.

Re: How to tell a SH-4 JB from a SH-6

Well ... to end this discussion: The seller ist happy with what he got and I am happy with what I got - just like Simon said.

And I knew that I wouldn't get a SSL-4 like in the description, cause the picture in the article description clearly showed a humbucker. So I took the risk and bought it, and it went out fine.

So if you want to blame anyone blame me for my naivety if you want - My pickup is great ;)

Cheers

If there was no sticker on the bottom there is another dead giveaway...

The Distortion has a magnet that is twice as thick when looking from the side... the only other traditional looking Duncan with that thick ceramic magnet is the Seymourizer II/Distortion Neck
