how to touch up chips from a poly finish

our tenor sax player, who is a careless bastard, ran into my with his sax and chipped off a spot of poly on my strat. It already has 4 chips, about 2mm in diameter. They're small, but now they're adding up.

Is there any way i could touch this up? They're all in the black area of the sun burst.

Character, man. Character. My Strat has scratches and dings in but so what. It's got character.

1- Sand down the problem area’s.
2- Tape off and paint the black if necessary.
3- Sand scuff the guitar body.
4- Spray an adhessive.
5- Then clear coat the guitar body.

If you do not need to paint any color then drop step #2.

black nail polish man. this girl i jammed with a few years ago was missing the entire bottom of the finish of the bottom horn of her Squier P-bass. It'd chipped off as one piece in a nasty fall. She used black nail polish and to be honest I didnt even notice until It was pointed out. If it doesnt bother you that it'd be a tad rough then the black would make it look mostly uniform.

Let 'em be! A sunburst start with dings and scratches looks more classy if you leave them as they are. Post pics of it instead :burnout: ;)

Spot treatments on poly are supposed to be really difficult if not impossible. It's not like polymerized tung oil or nitro where each layer of finish melts into the previous layer; poly is plastic, and new layers sit on top of the previous layers if it's already cured.

At least, that's my understanding.

If it were my guitar, if it's a black area, I'd use a sharpie to colour it in.

My guitars wear their chips, dings, and dents with pride.

Ploy is tough to fill. Black nail polish might be the best thing to do if you have to fix it. It'll be less noticable at least.

Re: how to touch up chips from a poly finish

I've used lacquer burn in sticks (Stew Mac and wood finishing shops carry them) on a used black MIM Strat. But that was because I was experimenting with fixing finish dings. I would use this method if it was NOT on the front of the guitar. I could not polish the one I did on the front of the body enough to make it less noticable that the ding.

Re: how to touch up chips from a poly finish

I've used ladies nail polish, model paints for colour and super glue to fill in the holes on deep chips on my Jacksons...

But i like the look of beat up strats..... you could leave it....

Re: how to touch up chips from a poly finish

I'd say leave it. Dents and dings and worn spots give guitars mojo...

Besides, you'll probably eventually end up putting more dents or dings on it, so just leave 'em...

I personally like guitars when they look "broken in". - But only when I'm the one who did the 'breaking in'....
