How to use my available pickups in the guitars that I'm building and modding.

Hi guys,

I have a few questions on how to use my available pickups in the guitars that I'm building and modding. My guitars are as follows:

  1. Les Paul: This is a '96 Gibson LP Studio, mahagony body and neck, maple top and ebony fingerboard. HH pickups, 2 volumes + 2 tones. Set neck, TOM bridge + stoptail.
  2. EVH-type: Custom build with a basswood body and single piece maple neck. one humbucker with one volume. Bolt-on, blocked 6-point tremolo.
  3. Soloist-type: Custom build with alder body, maple neck and rosewood fingerboard. Not yet finished, but will be HH pickpus, 2 volumes and 1 tone. Bolt-on, TOM bridge + strings through body.

Currently, I have a Gibson 500T, a Gibson 496R/500T set, a Gibson 490R/498T set and a Gibson 498T. I have the opportunity to buy a Pegasus/Sentient set for 90bucks in great condition and original packaging, so unless any of you advise me against that set, I'm gonna jump on that pronto. Also, I have a set of hybrids that I made myself using old pickups, and also have a pair of cheapbuckers off amazon. So, there are a few to chose for the three guitars.

The LP has the 490R/498T which I personally like, although hated by many people, I like the EQ difference as it makes them versatile. I can go from mellow soft on the neck to trebbly on the bridge, also from clean to crunch and lead by rolling off the volumes, and bassy or nasaly by playing with the tones; this is the most versatile guitar I've had. However, the other day I tried a LP with the 496R/500T combo which blew me away. So I bought a set to put it in my studio.

The EVH currently has the 500T, with which, although it does sound good, I'm not 100% satisfied. The pot is linear and it doesn't allow me to clean up very well, so I'm considering changing that too. Maybe go 500kOhm log and the 498T.

The Soloist is wood-only at the moment, I still need to buy the hardware and wire everything, but I'm pretty sure of what I want. Was thinking on installing the 490R/498T here, but since I might put the 498T on the EVH, they would be quite similar, thus making play only the Soloist. I will give my hybrids a try here, I don't have very high expectation, but I put some time into them, and who knows, they may turn out to be the bees knees. I was thinkin the Sentient/Pegasus may be at home here.

What do you think? Do any of you have experience with these pickups? What would you recommend given the wood and construction of the guitars?

I play mostly rock, be it Led Zeppelin, Guns n Roses, Judas Priest, KISS, some Metallica and Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, Aerosmith and the like. I tend to do blues-like impros and jams with some extra crunch. I don't use any pedals and play through a Katana 50 or a H&K Tube Edition 25.

I don't want three guitars to cover ALL musical genres, but I do want them to be different and versatile and unique, and to allow me to get tones similar to the bands I like.

Cheers,
Walter

P.S. PM if you live in Zürich and want to jam.

I'd jump on the Pegasus/Sentient set. Put them in the Soloist. If you like the pickups in the LP, who cares what anyone else thinks. Keep 'em. For the EVH, I'd go for something less output. Something in the 59 range or just a little hotter. It doesn't need anything super hot to sound great.

Yes, I was thinking that too. So:

490R/498T or 496R/500T for the LP, I'll try both combos and see what I like best.
Pegasus/Sentient for the Soloist
498T for the EVH, at least to try it out for now.

Thanks!

500T/496R makes a lot of sense to me in the LP, given you played an LP with them and loved it.
Pegasus/Sentient is a great option for a Soloist.
498T sounds like what's left for the EVH to be different.

If the 498T isn't it in the EVH, I'd probably go for a Custom with an unoriented A5 magnet. Or maybe a '59/Custom, possibly with same mag swap. Or a PATB-3 or Whole Lotta Humbucker, depending on how hot and classic rock/metal I want that one to sound.

I lost track, but if you wind up with a leftover 500T I might be interested in buying it from you.
OR...would you like to trade for a brand-new Vineham "Whiskey Sour" with an A8? Might be just the ticket for the EVH? (It's too low output for my taste but it's exactly what I asked him to build me so it's my fault, not his.)
10.5k scatterwound PAF-style pickup, A8 magnet custom ordered that way. Trem spaced too! Double aged white coils. I even have a polished A5 that could go with it. (That's the standard Whiskey Sour magnet.)

Sounds like a great plan. I’ll do that and see how it turns out. At least the EVH and LP will be fast to mod, the Soloist is still going to take some time. I can also try the Pegasus/Sentient in the LP in the meantime.

I’d more than happy to sell it to you, but if you’re in the USA, shipping from Switzerland may be a bit expensive. If you’re really interested, then I can get a quote for the shipping.

Sorry, I didn't pay attention to your location! I just saw 500T and got excited because I've been wanting to try one.
I am sure the shipping would be too much to make it worthwhile but thank you for the polite offer.
