I'm also quite set on only two controls on the surface, but I just thought of putting the controls in the control cavity. If there's enough room, one could change the sound from behind the guitar. It wouldn't work in a hurry, but it could be of some use.
That Radiohead mod sounds quite interesting, but I'm not sure if I'd have that much use for it to make it worthwhile, more than a curiosity for a couple of songs.
Something extra could be nice, but I hope that I don't forget that the guitar already comes with volume and tone, and they can shape the sound quite a lot! We'll see what I'll come up with. Thanks for your thoughts, I really appreciate them, keep 'em coming if you have more!

Other ideas? Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead has a circuit cut button that allows him to stutter notes. Press the button and it's turns off all pickups; release it and they're back on. That would involve drilling, too.
