How would the Li'l 59...

Re: How would the Li'l 59...

Neck or bridge?

It would probably match up well with a hotter broadcaster type pickup. But I prefer the look of a full sized HB in the neck of a tele if it's not a stock covered look.

Re: How would the Li'l 59...

I bet it would sound great. I had a Lil 59 in the neck of a Strat for awhile. Smooth and warm, but still had its own character. I imagine this would be a great match with a more typical Tele "twang" bridge.

Let us know how it sounds . . . and congrats on the win. :D

Re: How would the Li'l 59...

Thanks. The reason I asked is because I am not familiar with the Tele setup. I wasn't sure if the pup would even FIT in the Tele. If it WILL, then we are going to take her for a test drive.

BTW, what is the suggested wiring for this setup?

Check under the pickguard to see whether your MiM Tele is routed for a HB, as many are. If so, then you'll need a new pg with Strat routing and you'll be good to go. The standard Tele neck pickup routing is not big enough for anything else, but most of the recent non-vintage-RI Fender Tele models are routed for a neck HB or Strat pickup. I think the Lil 59 neck could work out nicely, but you could always try other Strat pickups in the neck later on, too.

Re: How would the Li'l 59...

Um, it IS a Li'l '59. The real question is whether the pickups are the same size and will readily swap without modifying the pickguard. I'd hate to modify the pickguard and discover the pup is not what we expected.

Wiring recommendations? Anyone?

Re: How would the Li'l 59...

A simple one is a stock 5-way with the neck hot connected to one lug, the bridge to the middle and the Red/White to the other end lug. However, I think I might go with a push-pull and wire it for series/parallel.

Re: How would the Li'l 59...

No, no, this is a 2-pup tele. We're only changing the neck pup at the moment. I know that two wires get taped together, but which ones?

Re: How would the Li'l 59...

I know. The red and whites get soldered and taped together. If you wire it like above you get:

1. Full Neck
2. Full Neck and Bridge
3. Bridge
4. Split Neck and Bridge
5. Split Neck

You may have to reverse some leads somewhere to avoid phasing issues, but at least you get more tones than the stock 3-way.

Re: How would the Li'l 59...

That would require a selector switch change. We're not looking to do that at this time, and the original s/c bridge is staying in for the moment.

Re: How would the Li'l 59...

A Strat Lil 59 neck pickup will not fit in a stock Tele pickguard or a vintage body route. If your guitar has a HB neck rout and you get a new pickguard routed for a Strat neck pickup, then your Strat Lil 59 should work fine wired up to the stock 3-way.

Re: How would the Li'l 59...

I don't know if this will help, but I wanted to do the same thing, but with a humbucker-sized pup. I went to a hobby store and bought a piece of that "hobby-grade" plywood. Its the real high quality stuff they use to build RC airplanes. Its real easy to cut and works great . . . temporarily.

You wouldn't even need to get as fancy as I did.

Re: How would the Li'l 59...

I see you finally found a use for those Peavey blade pickups Artie. How does it sound in a tele type guitar?

Re: How would the Li'l 59...

Its the guitar I play the most. I can't believe how "Tele" it sounds. It has the "twang", but none of the ice-pick. I should qualify this by saying . . . "for a cheap-ish guitar." The Jerry Donahue is harmonically richer, but too good for this guitar. I'm saving it for a Fender Tele, hopefully coming this next spring. The Super Ferrites, though, are perfect matches for this guitar.

Since I just installed SSL-6's in my Strat, its running about neck-and-neck with this one for "most-played" status. Its hard to choose sometimes.

Re: How would the Li'l 59...

Artie, what kind of tele is that and did you have to mod it to fit 2 humbuckers? I might have to try something similar if it doesn't take too much work to mod a tele for the "until now" useless Peavey dual blade pickups from my T-60.

Re: How would the Li'l 59...

Its the bottom-of-the-line Peavey Generation EXP. $167 new, out the door. It comes as an HSS, with a small swimming pool route under the singles. So all I had to do was make the pickguard. Piece o' cake. ;)

Sounds great.
